A 2026 double-blind randomized clinical trial followed 182 children with autism spectrum disorder, aged 3 to 11 years, who received either a placebo or kefir-derived probiotic supplements for 90 days. Children taking the probiotics showed significant improvements in adaptive behavior and reductions in autism-related symptoms compared with their own baseline assessments. The probiotic groups also experienced decreases in inflammation and stress-related markers, including C-reactive protein, insulin, and cortisol.
Researchers also found important changes in gut health. Children receiving the kefir-derived probiotics had higher levels of beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria and lower levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli), suggesting a healthier gut microbiome. An additional reduction in f***l calprotectin, a marker of gut inflammation, was observed in one probiotic group. The supplements were well tolerated, with only mild side effects reported and no serious treatment-related adverse events.
