Our third year at the Boro BBQ Festival was a huge success. Last year, we took home 4th in Chicken and 3rd in Ribs while it poured rain on us and we cooked standing in 3 inches of mud. This year, we had an absolutely beautiful Saturday even though Friday night was a bit chilly. We managed to improve across the board but our Anything Butt kept us from making a run for GC. Mathematically, we should be able to make a run for first in chicken in 2028 and a first in Anything Butt sometime in 2042 based on our current trajectory so lookout for Sh**un BBQ on the Retirement Home Circuit around then. We're already working on recipes to be more compatible with dentures and diabetes.

It's always great to hang out with a ton of great cooks that are also great people. Congratulations to Armstrong Smoke & Co. on a very well deserved First (fifth) Responder award and RGC. It was great meeting you guys even though rain can do your job.

Congratulations to The Big B Barbecue Company for handing us yet another ass whoopin' and claiming that GC. Jewell and I were talking and we decided you would do very well moving to Texas and setting up shop there. Just leave the Middle Tennessee contests in your rearview mirror. Let us know if you need help with travel accommodations or moving.

The Murfreesboro Rotary Club and Hop Springs did a great job with the event. There was live music and over 100 vendors this year with 11,000 attendees at the gate.

Better late than not at all...

Next up in our competition recap is the competition at Hilltop Supermarket in Clarksville. This is one of our favorite competitions of the year. Once again, we dealt with torrential downpours and heavy rain but we made it through. We were able to add a bit more hardware to the collection. It was awesome to have my daughter out there with us. She found a mummified Slim Jim in the parking lot and felt the need to take a picture with it.

Time to catch up on some recent contests.

We competed in the Boro BBQ Festival and came away with some hardware. It's always great to have The Kansas City Barbeque Society certified judges telling us how we're doing in a STACKED field. We came up a little short on the Anything But category but we felt great about how everything else turned out in the

We rely on great companies making great products to give us the best shot at getting our name called.

Welp... Like Icarus, we flew too close to the sun and got burned. Owing to the absolutely loaded Backyard division at Smoke on the Shores we tried to think outside the box and shoot for the moon with some nontraditional flavors and it didn't pan out. We had a great time cooking and catching up with some good friends but... lesson learned. On to the next one.

We had to completely change our chicken cook because of the weather. We have changed over to doing chicken on a pellet smoker but weren't sure our pellet smoker was going to survive the absolutely horrendous weather. It got too dark. We went with a Caribbean-inspired mango habanero profile.

Ribs and pork were disappointing but I'm happy with what we turned in. Other than an unsightly piece of fat on our chunked pork and our blackened chicken, they were pretty. We fought multiple problems on both cooks but were happy with what we turned in. The judges weren't. Lesson learned. I guess we can scrap the plans for espresso mint dragonfruit sauces. *Disclaimer: Based on our scores, you may think I'm being serious. We tried some non-traditional flavors but they weren't quite that wild.*

We'll be back and improved. Our boxes were way improved from last year but we know there are tons of ways to get better. Congratulations to every team that got a call and especially Ricky Thomas (RTQue) for his insane 1st place in Pro Pork. Ricky is a badass cook and an awesome, deserving guy. I'd love to tag him, but tagging on Facebook is a damn mess.

Smoke on the Shores BBQ Championship was our first sanctioned event we ever competed in. We got our asses kicked and learned a ton. We may be gluttons for punishment, because we're back again. Tomorrow, it's going down.

We keep saying we need to post more of our competition pictures, but this year we mean it. We can't wait to get back into the ring with some of the best people you could ever meet. We got better each time because we had a ton of great people to talk to that had no problem helping a competitor... and we also left each competition licking our wounds and promising to never make the same mistake again. It's going to be awesome just to see everyone again!

Look at our boxes from last year. Just look at 'em.
*shakes head in shame and disgust*

Hopefully, we'll be able to get some good shots of our turn-in boxes Saturday so we can show how much we've improved.

Today was a great day for Sh**un Competition BBQ. We didn’t leave with any hardware but we did add a third teammate. Alaina has wanted to come out with us and let’s just say she knocked it out of the park. She wasn’t just hanging out with us (even though we got do a lot of that too). She injected and seasoned all of our meats. She did the trimming. She helped tremendously with load in and load out. She was the only member of the team that didn’t get a single moment of sleep because she wanted to keep an eye on the overnight cooks. She showed maturity and tenacity. She made sure to walk around and introduce herself to every single team in the field. Sure… I’d have been proud to get a call so she could walk with us, but it’ll never compare to the pride I have as a dad watching my little girl become a strong and independent woman.

I don’t decide on dinner until I go to store and find what’s on sale. Today at Food Lion we had Denver steak and bags of avocados. So we rolled with beef and cheddar sandwiches with homemade beer cheddar sauce. The avocados were perfectly ripe so guacamole is always on the menu. The beef was smoked for 2 hours at 200 degrees until I got to 135 internal. Seasoned with Big James’ Kitchen Jalapeno AP seasoning and Hot Bologna seasoning. This stuff isn’t just for bologna or pork. It works really well on chicken and beef. Give James Johnson a shout if you’re looking to add a truly unique and wonderful twist to anything grilled or smoked because the Chub Rub is 🔥 🔥 🔥.
