Captain Jack's Donut Shack Captain Jack was a USCG licensed Captain. He sailed for 32 years with NOAA on Fisheries Research Vessels mainly out of Woods Hole.

Serving apple cider donuts (along with occasional chocolate, pumpkin, and blueberry!), coffee, spiced cider, and cocoa at McDougal Orchards in Springvale, Maine. The last ten years as Captain of the NOAA Ship Delaware II and NOAA Ship Albatross IV. In 2005 the Admiral offered him a position on the beach. There was no thinking about his answer "YES"! 005. Ellen always thought that apple cider donuts would go well here. While trying to come up with a name for the business one of our son's friends said “why not call it Capt Jack’s Donut Shack”. The first two years Jack made donuts on the back porch attached to the former bunkhouse/warming hut (see Farm History). Sales increased the second year and the decision was made to move inside. Some rearranging was done to give the donut operation more room and an exhaust hood was added. Yearly sales increased again and in 2008 a new Belshaw Donut Robot was purchased. This unit would double the output of the old one. With a new machine came problems and the old MK-1 was used as the primary machine for most of the season. With help from the local Belshaw distributor the bugs were worked out and the machine is performing very well. Capt Jack retired from NOAA in July 2009 after 36 years of federal service and now owns McDougal Orchards with his wife Ellen. In 2017 The Hanselmann Family under Capt Jack's careful training, will begin managing operations of the Donut Shack so that Jack can focus his energy on the Orchard with Ellen. Of course he will be in the Donut Shack often to perform quality control tests!

Join us for some VERY Merry Market fun At McDougal Orchards today and Sunday 9am-5pm. Hot apple cider donuts, gingerbread and chocolate donuts, hot cider and a hot cocoa bar too!

Then make your own wreath at the Orchard barn, get a picture with Santa, and do some local shopping!

We are so excited to open the Shack this coming Friday 11/28 (12-6pm), Saturday 11/29 & Sunday 11/30 (9am-5pm). We are decked out for Christmas and will have lots of treats including hot apple cider donuts while you check out Pick Your own at McDougal Orchards Very Merry Market with tons of vendors, wreath making, and a jolly St Nick!!

We are also doing a GIVING TREE and collecting items on this Amazon Wish list for York County Community Action's Head Start Program. Items on this list are sure to bring joy and fun to their students ages 3 -6 in York County. Join us this coming weekend 10/4 and 10/5 to celebrate the Shack's 20th Birthday with fun activities and giveaways! Pick Your own at McDougal Orchards will have some special activities and still has a maze and hay rides too! Gringos food truck will be on site and the weather looks beautiful for the weekend. Don't miss out on the fun!

We will be closing on Sunday 10/12 for the 2025 season.
