Your Story, Our Coffee: Episode 9 (except it wasn’t our coffee this time)

I ran into John in a coffee shop in Virginia Beach and he shared his amazing story with me. We just couldn’t capture it on a video.

“My name is John. I see you’re working on a computer. My son works with computers as well.”

“I served 4 years in the army and then went to school at Loyola College and graduated in 62. I’m 88 now. We didn’t have computers back then.”

“I studied philosophy. I read philosophy books and have a room full of them at my house.”

I shared how I read philosophy books and asked if philosophy had helped him live a better life.

“It has made my life 100 times better. I’m 88 now, and I will probably die soon. But I’m not afraid of death because it’s inevitable.”

“I meditate for hours every day”

I asked what exactly meditation meant to him.

“It’s any time spent getting to know myself better. I walked 2 miles to get here, and I was meditating because I was getting to know myself. Unlike most people, I know exactly who I am, where I come from, and where I’m headed.”

I asked what advice he would give to his twenty-year-old self.

“Know yourself….. knowing where you’re headed is very important as well.”

“If you’re a sailor and you don’t know where you’re going, you’re going to end up wherever the wind is going.”

“You made my day! Have a good life son!”
