The Real Frugalist We were frugal before the term became fashionable!

That being said this page is about making do with what you have, reusing and re-purposing, DIY, and surviving in a comfortable manner with less.

Gotta run out and change the open and close times for the solar chicken door. I put a reminder on my phone… look at me being all organized!!

This thing is worth its weight in gold!

Sunday! ā˜•šŸ‚

How did you do with the time change?

I think I’m fine… although that whole ā€œyou get an extra hour of sleepā€ thing is a load of nonsense! My body woke up at its usual time, thank you very much! I will absolutely be staring out the window at 4:30ish saying ā€œomg it’s SO dark!ā€

I might need a nap just to manage to stay awake until a decent bedtime tonight!

I think today will be a pretty relaxed one. No repairs, no painting, no household projects!

There may, however, be some crocheting and a little guitar playing. Because apparently I don’t know how to sit still without doing something! šŸ˜‚

And dinner? A lovely roasted chicken with carrots, parsnips, onions, and potatoes. THAT I will do! The house will smell wonderful.

Otherwise, I’m giving myself permission to enjoy a quiet Sunday.

Enjoy your day, people. Enjoy your day! ā¤ļø

Saturday! BRING IT ON! Happy Halloween too!

I think it’s time for me to be jamming in the kitchen! šŸŽ¶šŸšŸŽ

And I mean that in more ways than one!

Yup, I’ll be dancing around the kitchen while making a batch of homemade pear-apple jam! Because why just make jam when you can turn the kitchen into your own personal dance floor?

I’ll also be playing around with my new head mount for filming cooking videos. Will I use my GoPro or my phone? Haven’t figured that out yet!

There will be some trial and error, I’m sure. Possibly some interesting camera angles, a few technical difficulties, and probably some footage of absolutely everything EXCEPT what I’m trying to show you. šŸ˜‚

But that’s how we learn, isn’t it? You give it a shot, figure out what works, and adjust as you go.

And if nothing else, I’ll have some delicious homemade jam when I’m done!

We made it to Friday!

The grandchildren are home today because of a teacher workshop, so things should be lively around here!

Our handyman is coming to repair the frame of our basement door, which has decided to rot. Don’t you just hate when that happens? Still, I’d much rather pay for a repair than replace an entire door! If it can be fixed, that’s always my first choice.

Meanwhile, I’ve got a batch of homemade yogurt going. Making our own yogurt is one of those little frugal habits that really adds up over time. It’s so much cheaper than buying individual containers at the store, and it takes very little hands-on effort. Saving money doesn’t always have to mean doing without. Sometimes it just means making things yourself!

I also need to sit down and work on next week’s grocery list and menu. A little planning now saves a whole lot of money and helps keep food waste to a minimum.

And just so you know the clock on the stove is NEVER correct!

And then, of course, there’s laundry. Because apparently, no matter how much laundry you do, there’s always more waiting for you. šŸ˜‚

I should be fairly occupied today!

Happy Friday, everyone! What’s one little thing you do at home to save money?

Good morning! Another day, another few projects to cross off my never-ending list! šŸ˜‚

We’ve got about half a dozen pieces of firewood that are too long for the wood stove, so those need to be cut down. That shouldn’t take too long!

After that, I’m getting my strata assembled for dinner and tucked into the fridge until it’s time to bake. I’ve never made a savory bread pudding before, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out! I’ll have to share that recipe.

And then there’s a kitchen cabinet door that’s been irritating me. The vinyl coating has cracked, so today I’m peeling that off and giving the door a coat of BIN primer. Outside, thank you very much! That stuff smells to high heaven, so I’ll let it air out all afternoon before bringing it back inside. Over the next few days, it’ll get a couple of coats of paint, and voilĆ ! One more little repair crossed off the list.

None of these projects is particularly expensive or complicated, but taking care of what we already own instead of replacing it is a big part of how we live frugally.

A little time, a little elbow grease, and the satisfaction of making something look good again.

Just stretching my budget like I stretch my yoga pants!

And you know what? There’s always something around here that needs doing. Good thing I rather enjoy it!

Little-known fact about me: I was a maintenance woman at a hotel for years.

You break it, I fix it!

Today we’re having homemade corn chowder for dinner, so I decided to make some Japanese milk bread in the bread machine to go along with it!

Creamy corn chowder with bacon, potatoes, onions, and homemade broth, plus a loaf of soft, fluffy bread. Doesn’t that sound wonderful on a chilly New Hampshire day?

I’ve been running errands, doing laundry, cleaning, and getting things ready for dinner, and I’ve FINALLY stopped to sit down for a bit!

There’s always something to do around here, but a little rest is in order!

Hope you’re all having a wonderful Wednesday! ā¤ļø

Wednesday morning and it’s mighty chilly out there! 29 degrees! 🄶 Brrrr!

The coffee is brewing, the woodstove is doing its job, and I’m mighty glad to be inside where it’s warm!

New Hampshire is reminding us that winter is right around the corner!

Stay warm, folks!
