The ladies’ season comes to an end as we fall to Borgia 5-2. The score doesn’t indicate how tight this game was from start to finish. The Eagles pushed to the very end.
Borgia scored their first goal on a penalty kick and their second on an own goal to go up 2-0. But Andi Giebler finds Maddie Herron just before the half to make it 2-1. Then it was game on.
There were some missed chances on both ends, but Borgia eventually cashed in to make it 3-1. Immediately after, Ava Hayes crossed a ball to Tess Newman to punch home the second goal of the game. The score remained 3-2 until there were 7 minutes remaining. Borgia scores two more late to earn the district title.
This team broke more than a dozen school records, including their 17th team win, 114 goals scored, and reaching a district title game for the first time. This team was a force all season long.
To our seniors: thank you. Avery Merkel, your athleticism and willingness to put the team first in all circumstances was admirable. You were assigned to shut down the opponent’s best player, and you delivered. Kara Schmidt, you were our vocal captain and the single most encouraging player I’ve ever coached. You steadied that back line and were a huge reason we were so solid defensively. Tessa Newman—what a scoring machine. 63 career goals and a willingness to do all the dirty work when no one else would. What a fabulous career.
This senior group had 60 career wins. That legacy will last. You are passing the torch to a group that will reload, and no doubt push to be right back here next year.
Thank you to all our fans to came out to support us night after night. Thank you for being loud in the stands tonight and representing Sullivan well. We hear it and feel it.
Now we turn the page to the boys season, which starts tonight at 8pm with our first open field. We’ll sleep when we’re dead 🫠
