Writing The Story
When I was an undergrad, I took a creative nonfiction workshop at the School of General Studies at Columbia University. For the first time since arriving on campus, I was not surrounded by people my age. Instead, the small class was filled with people 20 to 50 years older than me - people who had lived lives far outside the ivory walls of academia. Some had fought in wars and lived in foreign countries. Some married and divorced. Some had struggled with addiction, lost lovers to AIDS, and battled demons within themselves I had only begun at that time to comprehend.
Throughout the semester, we were encouraged to write our stories - to delve deeply into our experiences of triumph and joy, heartbreak and loss, love and pain. Each week, we would write a piece that was around 5 pages long, and bring copies for each person in the class. Then we would read the piece aloud, and offer each other encouraging and constructive criticism.
In my four years, it was the most valuable course I took as an English major. I enjoyed it so much that I took it twice.
I’d like to facilitate a cathartic writing workshop for those who might like to commit to writing a piece each week. My aim is to offer a supportive environment to encourage you to tell your Story through the process of writing, editing and honing your craft. In this first course, I’d like to focus on creative nonfiction, but would also welcome poetry and songwriting, as presented on the written page.
Ideally, this workshop would have 6-8 people who are both committed to developing their own writing, as well as supporting others. This would be a 6-week workshop, with each meeting lasting 2 hours.
Cost $150.
