I know it’s late, but I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of today’s baker drama. As a small business cottage baking owner, I wanted to put this out there to anyone who has ever felt bullied or used, and to someone who works their butt off trying to create a brand for themselves.
No. 1- I am always open to sharing my work with anyone who wants to learn. The world of creating sweet treats will always be in demand; there is enough space for us all, and honestly, we all use each other’s recipes and tweak them because we all started from nowhere.
No. 2- Please, please, please remember, kindness costs absolutely nothing. But seriously, making one absurd, threatening comment about something that makes you angry, so you blow it up on social media for the world to see, will follow you for the rest of your career. Don’t mess it up for yourself.
No. 3- I think it hurt me watching both creators and their videos because both of them are small, women-created businesses. Neither of them deserved to have their lives turned upside down over a controversy about Fruity Pebbles. We are supposed to be creating all these wonderful desserts to support each other, because this is what we do to support ourselves and bring sweetness into this world.
No. 4- There is room for us all. Social media has given us all – dessert creators, teachers, novices, artists, professionals – a space to show the world that making stuff like cake pops, cakes, and sugar art is freaking cool! There is room for all of us to participate.
No. 5- If you ever want to learn, please reach out. I don’t do what I do to keep it to myself; I do what I do to bring joy into this world through the treats I provide, because it is something that took decades to learn. When I started out, I had nothing but a Wilton kit and YouTube. We all started nowhere, but we have so far to go. If you want to learn, come over, let’s have a cup of coffee, turn up the music, and make the entire kitchen smell like cookies and cake. I’ll teach it to you step by step until you make it your own creation!
No. 6- Maralicious Cakes will never condone bullying, fear-mongering, hatred, prejudice, or violence. You’re allowed to be who you are, and that person is beautiful.
We are not perfect in this world. I will still look fondly, with hope, when I see that cake cart in Chelsea every Thursday as I drive through town, with the hope that one day someone will turn to me and say, “Hey, I love what you do,” “I saw you on social media,” or “I love your desserts!” Because a baker decided to go after their dreams and it inspired me to do the same.
We are all in this together.
With that said, happy baking to all of us! Everyone of us who try to make a difference in our lives every day because we want to bring sweet treats to your life!
Love,
Chamara
