THE CROWN AFFAIR IS COMING TO THE BRONX THIS JULY ✨👑

NEFER Bookcafé, Becoming the CEO Network, and Generation Acceleration present The Crown Affair: A Black Girl and Her Braids — a joyful day of books, beauty, braids, culture, and celebration featuring Penguin Random House author Jaylene Clark Owens.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10:30 AM–4 PM, we're gathering families, elders, children, readers, dreamers, and beauties from across the city for an unforgettable community celebration honoring the brilliance and cultural legacy of Black hair.

Come experience a live author talk, read-aloud, and book signing with
, whose beloved book A Black Girl and Her Braids has inspired children and families across the country to see the beauty in themselves.

Throughout the day, you'll enjoy performances, storytelling, music, art, interactive exhibits, and hands-on learning about natural hair care, braiding traditions, and the CROWN Act.

And for our future stylists? We're excited to present Braiding Camp by , a fun, beginner-friendly experience where participants will learn the basics of hair braiding and discover the creativity, skill, and entrepreneurship behind the craft. Space is limited, so get to getting on the tickets.

A place where curls, locs, braids, fades, waves, and textures of every kind are celebrated. A place where children see themselves reflected. Where the beauty of the Bronx and its people is on full display.

Last week, we gathered to remember Eleanor Bumpurs.

Not simply the brutality of her death, but the fullness of her life.

In conversation with LaShawn Harris and Andre Easton, we were reminded that so often history reduces us to the moments of violence enacted upon us. What we inherit are snapshots. Headlines. Court records. Police reports. Yet behind them are whole lives lived in relationship to neighbors, family, faith, routine, joy, and care.

We talked about Ms. Bumpur's immaculate apartment and what it represented: the sanctity of home. A sacred space she tended with dignity and intention. A place of refuge, self-determination, and humanity. We reflected on what it means when violence enters those spaces and what we lose when a home is no longer treated as sacred.

We talked about Ms. Bumpur's going to the movies before her death.

We talked about "what looks like crazy" and sytems of abuse and neglect that compound and impact us psychologically and emotionally. Then hide their hand.

We talked about what the facts actually show — thanks to the many hours of oral accounts, information requests, news reports, court documents, photography, and years of research, across generations and states, that LaShawn poured into fact-finding and unrelenting academic, intellectual and ethical rigor.

The conversation asked us to consider how we remember and the gift of excavation.

Caribbean folks in New York in 1900s built true shared economies—pooling money, finding housing, helping each other get on their feet, and making a way out of no way.

NEFER is proud to be part of NYC’s Work, Learn & Grow Program with .ny and NYC Department of Youth and Community Development — and honestly, they sent us a star. ✨

Meet Tien: senior, rising culinary arts + entrepreneurship major, manga and fantasy book fan, and now one of the creative minds behind some of the most delicious custom drinks we’ve had behind the coffee bar. Every drink he makes is unexpected, imaginative, and way too good. Ask him what he’s reading, tell him what flavors you like, and let him put you on to something magical.

Beyond the coffee bar, Tien is also learning the real mechanics of running a business — helping build the financial structure of our menu, understanding pricing and operations, and even assisting with book selection for the shop.

Oh and please believe . Ask him!

We also want to give flowers to Dwayne Brown and the entire .ny team. The care they put into connecting young people with small businesses and community spaces like NEFER matters deeply. This is how we grow the Bronx: by creating opportunities for young people who will one day create opportunities for others.
