Muirhead Canning Hood-Crest Fruit

Muirhead Canning Hood-Crest Fruit Premium tree-ripened canned peaches, pears, apricots, cherries and plums. We bottle applesauce, apple butter, and diced tomatoes.

Custom canning, freeze drying, and jam services also available. Hood-Crest Fruit is a taste of the good ol' days when attention to detail and quality were the norm. Hood-Crest Fruit has been enjoyed at dining room tables around the Northwest and beyond since 1946. What makes Hood-Crest fruit so great?

::Quality Fruit:: Our fruit comes from local Northwest orchards. The volcanic soils of our area

and mild climate create fruit that is unsurpassed.

::Quality Growers:: We work with wonderful growers who take pride in the quality of their fruit. By carefully monitoring their orchards they are able to pick the fruit at the perfect moment for canning and carefully transport the fruit to the cannery (sometimes just a trip down the hill!)

::Traditional canning process:: Hood-Crest Fruit is canned at the last remaining small, family operated cannery in the Northwest - the Muirhead Canning Company. Fruit is canned just like at home. Fresh, ripe fruit is handled with care and packed by hand into cans where it is sealed and heated in a hot water bath to preserve the premium quality and flavor.

::Our customers:: While you can find Hood-Crest Fruit at select stores and fruit stands around the Northwest, our main customer base are individuals who have tried our fruit, loved it, and loyally order fruit for home delivery each fall. We have *the best* customers around!

::Delivery:: Each fall we deliver fruit to the door of our Northwest customers. Russell Loughmiller, owner of the cannery and Hood-Crest Fruit, is often at the wheel meeting new customers and saying hello to old friends.

The crew was in today so we could label come cans. Often times, we'll label cans by hand, but for larger amounts needed at once we'll use this older machine. -Dylan

We've just received the labels for the preserves we've been making lately. Not overly sweet but they're still full of flavor. Fonetia has done a great job at making these. The marionberry is my favorite. -Dylan

Taken roughly 37 years apart(1952 and 1989, respectively) we have two photos of some women sorting fruit by hand, a process we still regularly use. Interesting to see these older photos as much of the equipment is still in use today. -Dylan

After having been filled and the lid put on, these jars of chunky applesauce are about to go in our hot box. The hot box, when on, is consistently filled with steam where the jars will reach between 190 to 200 degrees. The helps both with killing microorganisms and sealing the jar.

Well we're now in summer and the cherries have grown so much in just a few months. With such a vibrant color, these will be soon ready for harvest. It's been great to see and document their progress here at the cannery. -Dylan

Another week and the cherries are inching closer to harvest. A lot of growth has been happening in a short time since the trees had started to bloom. Not much longer left, and we'll be able to can our own cherries. -Dylan

I've been going through some of the older photos of the cannery. Here we have the same perspective, each taken roughly 37 years apart. 1952, 1989, and 2026 respectively. -Dylan
