Great view coming down on a quick little trip over to Temple yesterday evening, got to try out the new Go Pro Max 2 360…a tad over-flare on the landing with the gusty headwind made for a great operational stress test of the nosewheel shimmy dampener, nice firm landing to make those Navy pilot’s proud….Air Force pilots feel free to judge quietly and shake your head like Grandpa Frank would have…AIRPOWER….😉

San Antonio has some great restaurants and even greater history, which you have to digest in pieces like a full-course meal….last time in town, we ate at the oldest restaurant on the River Walk aptly named Casa Rio, built in 1946, same year my great grandpa purchased our property in Thorndale…but my good friend Efrain Lopez recommended we venture away from the tourist-driven downtown area to a place that is even older, established in 1941 by Pedro and Cruz Cortez…Mr. and Mrs. Cortez were the same generation as my grandparents, with the same work ethic and values….having emigrated from Guadalajara during the Great Depression, the enterprising young Pedro went into business while working in the Marketplace area, and started his future empire with 3 dining tables….by the 1950’s they had added a bakery, and a couple decades later added more restaurants…today they boast seating for more than 600 across San Antonio, with numerous family-owned venues nearby, including La Margarita next door…Mr. Cortez passed away in 1984, but the family restaurant empire has done nothing but grow, now 3 generations deep and upholding the value of “familia” with more than 500 employees across the portfolio…walking through the Marketplace, one could spend days ogling cowboy hats, belts, and boots with the smell of fresh leather hanging in the air, but we came for the food….Mi Tierra itself is an extremely popular place, even mid-afternoon we had to wait 25 minutes to be seated...no problem, because we spent half that time picking out pastries and cookies from the bakery counter….a mariachi band regaled us with an epic lullaby while we waited, and the food was excellent, but the real treat here is just getting to soak in a piece of authentic history….we’ll be writing more about this place, the food, and the epic family story in the near future…..TGIF – we got the FULL BBQ LINEUP straight ahead, big wedding headed out, lots of big orders for the weekend…..ALL AHEAD FULL….😉

Grandpa Frank would have been 93 years old this month, so in his honor I’m showing him how to properly land his plane, which is to say, on concrete…..he used to do this on his farm using a 1,000-ft gravel road that wasn’t straight, dodging cows and such….he was one of a kind, AIRPOWER….;-)

Before embarking on a journey it’s important to check your tires, buckle up, and get COFFEE…on Saturday, we stopped by Ripple and Rose en route to San Antone, but they were closed for the 4th, so went three blocks north to Haciendo Coffee Roasters, and found most excellent strawberry lemonade as well as an Iced Caramel Latte…yeah, y’all didn’t know I was a pinkie waggin’ hipster on the weekends….PRO TIP – I ain’t, but I like the cold brew as it combines my childhood love of chocolate milk with my grownup love of caffeine, and my eternal dislike of 100-degree weather….good, friendly folks, and they even support the local newspaper and journalists like myself with copies of the Taylor Daily Press and East Wilco Insider, which if you haven’t seen the latest copy has my good friend Efrain Lopez on the front cover looking very suave, and talking about the growth of the Taylor Airport…it even has a picture of Justin working on my airplane in there from our maintenance visit last month….CAFEEINE AND AIRPLANES, HOO RAH.…😉

We are back on the ground, after a nice little 4th of July vacation to SAN ANTONIO….thanks to the staff for covering the weekend and Monday, we’ve got lots to report on in the days ahead, from the Menger Hotel to the River Walk to the various food stops along the way…breakfast Sunday morning was at one of the best places downtown, they started as a food truck and catering but now have two brick and mortar locations….not everyone makes the transition from Food Truck roots to a sit down location, but Box Street has pulled it off, raised the bar, and set a gold standard and I’m betting you’ll see more of these, but they are growing slowly which is wise when in a crowded marketplace with high rents.…two visits now, and it has been exceptional both times, the service and the food….between the 5 of us, we sampled just a fraction of the thorough but not burdensome menu, and all were executed perfectly….Eggs Benedict is notoriously difficult to nail down, but they did so once again….the brunch salad to go with omelettes was a homerun; that salad was just amazing, with nuts and berries, and a light, sweet, dressing and fresh greens….a side of lightly cured salmon, was done right, though I may have over-extended my taste buds getting salmon for breakfast, as it clashed with the phenomenal blueberry pancakes…mea culpa, ain’t the chef’s fault for my nonchalant attempt to sample everything…this place is a very short walk from the Tower of the America’s, the Alamo, and even less to the Riverwalk, it’s ground zero for any start to a San Antonio excursion…..HOO RAH…😉
