“nature is stronger
than all human priorities”
-Marty Rubin

This is a Chef gardeners’s nightmare. We are growing so many delicious herbs, salad greens, berries, and veggies to share at the restaurant and our events, and he is not one of our customers.

This is a young buck, very brave, very curious and has been visiting twice a day at around 9 PM and 6 AM. We have startled him and scared him off quite a few times. Last night we couldn’t believe how close Jonathan got to him before scaring him off.

This morning he startled me when I was doing my garden checks and didn’t even see him until I looked up and realized he was in the yard about 20 feet away.

At first, he walked right up to me. I told him he couldn’t be here, and he almost seemed to understand and started to walk away. Then I knew I had to go scare him away, but as I walked up to him, he didn’t seem to have a concern in the world.

Even though this encounter feels so magical and special this morning, we really don’t want him here. It’s a very bittersweet feeling. I am curious about him too, and I think he’s beautiful.

We have worked so hard and put a giant amount of love into our gardens. We are not growing them for him. Time to put the fences up that we really don’t want to install. We love being so close and connected to nature at our home. We don’t think the natural methods we’ve been using are going to work much longer and hopefully he doesn’t bring friends…
(I think my sigh in the second video tells you exactly how I feel- so torn between his beauty and my worry that he’s going to find the parsley and carrots next)

In almost 2 decades, this was one of the harder jobs we have ever worked and completed. If you live in Northern Michigan, then you know that we had quite the rain system come through right at dinner time from about 6 PM until 9 PM

This was at the exact time we were working to serve an almost 200 person dinner under a tent, at the top of a hill. The Catering tent was not directly connected to the tent, and we lost half our staff manpower due to the fact that every tray with plated food that went out had to have an additional staff person holding an umbrella over it to keep it from getting ruined in the rain….

This is not going to be a post that complains about the weather, or looking for sympathy. This is simply going to be a gratitude statement. That words will never be enough to describe how thankful and proud we are of our s2s team.

Soaked to the bone, cold, wet feet, and yet they still pushed through and smiled from start to finish. Oh yes, deeper inside our minds there was definitely concern and worry, and it was even still, we needed to give our guests the best experience we possibly could last night. The venue manager even told us it was one of the worst weather situations she’s ever seen during dinner time at their venue.

we all did our very best
we all worked hard
harder than usual
we felt the giant gratitude of the guests
of the hosts too and their unfailing Trust with us to do the job that must be done
it was the most incredible evening
to see our team pull together and
despite the weather
serve a three course plated dinner

our s2s crew never gave up.
we all figured it out
THANK YOU
Olivia, Vanessa, Brock, Derek, Alexa, Brittany, Ava, Stella, Nick, Katie, Kelsie, Andy, Riley, Marissa, Marella, Claudia

❤️ with sincere gratitude,
Jonathan and Stephanie

Thankfully, the rain held up long enough for us to get this work of art into the tent safely. It’s the only picture/video we took the whole day.

Every so often, the Restaurant experiences a day that hits a pace we do our best to be ready for. Sunday June 14 was one of those days. We were fully staffed, and our team was on board to give their best love and care to the mission: to give our guests, the best experience in hospitality and dining possible.

The day hummed along to the Chef soundtrack of songs that filtered throughout the dining room. Music lending a positive and happy energy at every greeting, every plate served, every spoken word of gratitude that was shared between customers and our team.

The chefs and kitchen team worked really hard and as quickly as they could to assemble every entrée, made from scratch, and made with creative intention to be both beautiful on the plate and delicious in every bite.

The servers danced around the dining room, a special sense of knowing when to step right or left, careful not to turn around too quickly- supporting one another, helping each other out, smiling all the way.

The host at the door worked tirelessly to organize the room. Making sure to communicate clearly availability, timing, and ensure that when you walk in the door, you are greeted with the brightest sunshine welcome you’ve ever experienced.

At the end of the day, when all of the pans on the line were empty, and so many menu items were 86’ed (sold out) we let out a huge sigh of relief. All the dishes were done in the pit, the floors were swept and mopped, the lights turned off… and We felt satisfied. We predicted it would be a great day to have a great day and thank you to everyone who showed up to make it possible.

The moral of the story is that days like this require a reset. We will be closed until Thursday, June 18 when we reopen at 8 AM. We had already planned to be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday because of a large annual event that we cater.

We never like to close the restaurant, and for anyone feels like this is unexpectedly done we appreciate your understanding and patience. Owning an operating, a small business has many challenges, and we always do our best to figure them out, and make the best decision we can to move forward.

We will take the next few days to get organized and ready and look forward to seeing you when we reopen on Thursday.
Until then, we hope you have a great start to your week, and thank you for following along on our story. We feel very fortunate to do what we love and share it with all of you.

Love always, s2s
