With daylight saving time approaching, we'll soon be spending more of our evenings indoors. It's a good reminder of why designing around natural light matters. It helps regulate our circadian rhythms, making it an important part of creating interiors that support our well-being.

I've always been curious about what happens when we stop designing for what's expected and start questioning what's possible. Some of the most meaningful ideas come from challenging the way we've always done things, and I believe that's where real innovation begins.

What is one design convention you think deserves to be challenged?"

In a competitive market, thoughtful spaces can make all the difference. By first understanding the people who will experience them, we can create environments that feel personal and have a distinct sense of place, rather than simply following design trends.

I've always believed that the spaces we live in should tell a story about who we are. In my own home, every piece of art holds personal meaning, creating a space that feels like a true reflection of me.

What makes a piece of art resonate with us? Research in neuroaesthetics shows how the context surrounding a piece, along with our memories and experiences, can shape our response to it. As a designer, I see that as part of art’s power in a space - beyond its visual impact, it can evoke emotion and give a room a deeper sense of identity.

I recently joined Dean Wehrli on the New Home Insights podcast, presented by John Burns Research and Consulting, for a conversation about design, merchandising, and what it really means to create spaces that connect with people. We talked about why beautiful design alone isn’t enough and why we have to think beyond demographics to understand the human condition.

It was a conversation I truly enjoyed, and I’d love for you to give it a listen: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/models-merchandising-and-the-mind-of-the-homebuyer/id1383974646?i=1000792608512

What I’m reading this October - How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain by Lisa Feldman Barrett

I’ve always been fascinated by how our minds shape the way we experience the world, and this book takes that idea even further. It challenges the belief that emotions are automatic and explores how the brain constructs them from our experiences and perceptions. It's a fascinating look at something that feels instinctive, yet may be far more complex than we realize. Last month, I attended City Scout: Montreal and found myself thinking about what it takes to create a downtown where people don’t just spend time, but feel a sense of belonging. Here are a few takeaways I brought home with me:

1. Beauty is infrastructure - Art and design should shape communities from the start.
2. The built environment matters - Every space can support or diminish human flourishing.
3. Place is both physical and felt - The best environments engage the body, mind, and imagination.
4. Participation creates belonging - Art, culture, and interaction turn people into coauthors of an environment.
5. Design goes beyond optimization - Function matters, but so do beauty, discovery, emotion, and connection. There are places we experience, and places where we come alive.

Thank you Downtown Denver for bringing together such a thoughtful group of leaders and creating space for these conversations!
