STAFFING:
Finding staff in the restaurant business is tough enough and then you have to retain them. Well here are a few tips in retention.

1) Competitive Pay- Track salaries and hourly wages on such sites as LinkedIn and Zip Recruiter to compare what restaurants and companies are paying there staff members on all levels. Also conduct regular reviews to adjust wages based on performance and market standards. I have had the experience that someone will leave for .50 cents more an hour. Don't let that happen!
2) Benefits and Perks- For some people it not all about the money, it's about having a balanced life. Benefits such as health insurance or a stipend towards health insurance, paid time off, shift meals or family meals, opportunities for advancement, and offering the same days off every week so your staff can plan what they want to do ahead of time ( this also cuts down on time they request off, which helps in scheduling and makes them very happy).

3) Positive Work Environment- Foster a positive and inclusive work culture where employees feel valued, respected, and supported. Encourage teamwork, open communication, and provide opportunities for feedback.

4) Training and Development- Invest in cross-training staff in various ways to enhance their skills, knowledge and keep it interesting.

5) Recognition- Recognize employees for their hard work and contributions through verbal praise and performance bonuses. Celebrate milestones and achievements as a team.

6) Clear Expectations- Communicate clear expectations regarding job responsibilities, performance standards, and goals. Provide constructive criticism to help employees improve.

7) Exit Interviews- Conduct exit interviews with departing staff members to understand their reasons for leaving and identify areas for improvement. Use this feedback to make necessary changes and prevent future turnover.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a supportive and rewarding work environment that encourages staff retention in the restaurant business.

Controlling costs are essential to the success any restaurant. Labor being one of the most important and hardest. Here are a few strategies to help control labor costs while maintaining profitability and ensuring quality service.

1) Optimize Scheduling: Use historical data and sales forecasts to properly schedule staff efficiently. Ensure you have proper coverage during peak times and are not overstaffed during slow periods.
2) Cross-Train Staff: Cross-training staff to perform multiple duties can help you adjust staffing levels based on demand.
3) Implement Time Tracking Systems: Use time tracking systems to monitor employee hours accurately. This helps prevent unauthorized overtime and ensures that you are working within the labor laws.
4) Set a Labor Budget: Establish labor cost targets as a percentage of sales and regularly audit against your targets.
5) Monitor and Reduce Turnover: High turnover can increase recruitment and training costs. Focus on employee satisfaction.
6) Control Overtime: Overtime hours need to be approved and monitored daily so adjustments can be made to limit it. That's why cross-training is so valuable.
7) Invest in Training: Properly trained staff are more efficient and less likely to make costly mistakes.
8) Monitor Food and Beverage Costs: Efficient inventory control and portion control can help reduce both food and beverage costs, indirectly impacting labor costs by optimizing operations.

By implementing these strategies and maintaining a proactive approach to controlling labor costs, you can optimize your restaurant's profitability without sacrificing quality or service.
