❤️ THE GUS KATRIS STORY — FROM GREECE TO THE AMERICAN DREAM ❤️
September 29, 1933 – March 19, 2022
As American Table Restaurant celebrates 39 years of serving the Warsaw community, we want to share the remarkable story of the man whose determination, sacrifices, and hard work helped make it all possible — our founder, Gus Katris.
🇬🇷 1933 — Humble Beginnings in Greece
Gus was born on September 29, 1933, in the small village of Nestani, Greece. With only a fourth-grade education, his opportunities were limited, but his determination was not.
After serving in the Greek military in Tripoli, he decided to leave his homeland in search of a better future.
🇨🇦 1956 — A New Beginning in Canada
At just 22 years old, Gus left Greece for Canada, where his sister was already living.
He arrived with virtually no money, limited English, and only a fourth-grade education.
Over the next several years, he worked whatever jobs he could find, including railroad work, farming, and restaurants.
❤️ 1958 — Building a Family
In 1958, Gus married Nitsa through an arranged marriage. Together, they began building a life centered on family, sacrifice, and hard work.
🇺🇸 1969 — Coming to America
In 1969, Gus moved to Chicago to help with his cousin’s restaurant.
By 1972, he had accomplished something remarkable. Despite his limited education and inability to read or write English fluently, he opened his own restaurant in downtown Chicago.
His restaurant was located on the ground floor of the building housing WLS-TV, Chicago’s ABC television affiliate.
For 14 years, Gus worked hard building his business and supporting his family.
1986 — An Unexpected Setback
In 1986, Gus learned that his restaurant lease would not be renewed.
According to Gus, ABC had plans to convert his restaurant space into a ground-level television studio as part of its efforts to keep Oprah Winfrey from leaving.
Oprah eventually established her own Harpo Studios, but Gus lost his restaurant.
He would often tell the story that he lost his restaurant because of Oprah!
Suddenly, at 53 years old, Gus was out of business.
With only a fourth-grade education, unable to read or write English fluently, and a family to support, he faced the difficult reality of starting over.
But giving up was never in Gus’s nature.
🏡 1987 — A Second Chance in Warsaw, Indiana
Through a cousin, Gus heard about an empty restaurant building in Warsaw, Indiana.
He drove to Warsaw with his son, Chris, to look at the property.
Chris believed the location and community had potential, and together with Nitsa, they decided to take a chance.
On October 26, 1987, Gus, Nitsa, and Chris Katris opened American Table Restaurant.
What began as a second chance for a hardworking immigrant became a family business that has now served the Warsaw community for 39 years.
Over the decades, American Table has employed generations of wonderful people, many of whom have been with us for 20, 30, and nearly 40 years.
And countless customers have become part of our extended American Table family.
❤️ March 19, 2022 — Remembering Gus
Gus passed away on March 19, 2022, at the age of 88.
He left behind much more than a restaurant.
He left a family, a business, a lifetime of hard work, and an example of what perseverance and determination can accomplish.
The two photographs we are sharing represent two important parts of his life.
The first shows Gus at the restaurant, where he spent so much of his life working and building something for his family.
The second shows Gus surrounded by his grandchildren — a beautiful reminder that his greatest legacy extends far beyond the restaurant business.
2026 — Celebrating 39 Years and a Lasting Legacy
As we celebrate 39 years of American Table, we reflect on how different things might have been had Gus never lost his Chicago restaurant.
What must have seemed like one of the greatest disappointments of his life ultimately led our family to Warsaw, Indiana.
And for that, we will always be grateful.
Gus’s story is a reminder that the American Dream isn’t necessarily about wealth, education, or where you begin in life.
It’s about opportunity, hard work, sacrifice, resilience, and creating something meaningful for the generations who follow.
From a small village in Greece to Canada, Chicago, and finally Warsaw, Indiana — Gus Katris truly lived the American Dream.
We miss him, we honor him, and we are proud to continue the legacy he helped create.
To our loyal customers, dedicated employees, and the Warsaw community, thank you for being part of our family’s story for nearly four decades.
❤️ In Loving Memory of Gus Katris
