The Davenport Coffee Lounge

The Davenport Coffee Lounge Like a chapel, but for caffeine. The Dav began in ’57 when the SIS was founded. The room is named after Fredrick M.

Davenport (1866-1956) and was originally a chapel. When Kay Spiritual Center was completed, the Davenport Memorial Room served more as a space for community building. In the 1980s, after the Shah of Iran fell and other things in the world were amiss, SIS students found themselves lacking an appropriate space to sit, think, and discuss world affairs. The SIS student government decided to convert th

e Davenport Chapel into a Coffee Lounge, and the Davenport Memorial Room became the Davenport Coffee Lounge. The Dav is a non-profit student run organization, whose aim is to create a forum that enhances cross-cultural communication and forges bridges of understanding across communities in a friendly, harmonious and nurturing environment. Davenport brings students, faculty, staff and members of the community together in a unique and relaxing atmosphere where communication is facilitated, and ideas are exchanged in a friendly and constructive environment. The students are empowered to learn about service to the community, and the importance of caring and giving back. Teamwork, friendship, and cooperation are critical skills, which are transferred to the students, who in turn create compassion, loyalty, and commitment to serving the local and global community. From making at most three pots of coffee a day and offering hot water for tea, Davenport has come a long way, now offering a diverse set of chai latte specialty drinks, pour-overs, french presses, and locally made food options.

Join us in the SIS Atrium for a coffee tasting with 734 Coffee on Thursday morning from 11AM - 12PM. 734 Coffee is a product that helps the Humanity Helping Sudan Project, a project for building new lives and a brighter future for the refugees of Sudan. "The coffee is harvested by growers right in the Gambela region (a region in Ethiopia where over 200,000 displaced South Sudanese citizens now live after fleeing war, atrocities, drought, and famine in South Sudan), and after it is brought to the US, 80% of sponsorship dollars go to educational scholarships for refugees of Sudan.”
The founder, Manyang Reath Kher, is a Sudanese refugee himself with an inspiring story and an incredible purpose.

We hope to see you there!

Yesterday a group of Dav staff members along with volunteers from the AU Eagle Endowment worked together to prepare & package meals for A-SPAN, a volunteer program in the DMV that serves meals to the homeless. Supplies were purchased from the proceeds of the November Drink of the Month. Thank you to the AU community, the volunteers, the Eagle Endowment, and of course Vigilante Coffee for caffeinating our community initiative! We couldn’t have done it without you. Buying a tasty featured drink of the month can have a far greater impact than you might think.
Are you a member of an AU organization and have a charity in mind that you want to help out? Let us know!
