Our story:

The "Mother Lode" sourdough starter was brought up to Alaska by a cheechako during the 1899 Gold Rush at Anvil Creek. He made his way into the Northwest Arctic Region by dog sled and on foot, bringing all of his valuables with him. Like many Sourdoughs of the time, he stashed his starter in a sack he kept tucked in his long-johns to protect it from the cold. The starter and story was shared with my Mom, Wyn Huss, in 1967 when she was a cheechako teacher in Point Hope. She became a Sourdough in Kotzebue where she taught for 30 years.
