Here is literally a nightmare for small business: $25/hr minimum wage.

I’m not against people making a living wage — I’ve worked every job in this restaurant since 2016. But here’s the math for a small town:

Right now, my cooks make $15-$18/hr. Servers make $2.13/hr + tips and usually go home with $20-$28/hr on good nights. A $25/hr mandate means I’d need to raise menu prices 40-50% just to cover labor.

That means your $14 fajita plate becomes $20. Your $3 sweet tea becomes $4.50. In Whitewright, Denison, Bells — people stop eating out at those prices.

Big chains can automate, cut staff, or absorb it for a while. Small, family-run places like Tejas Mexican Grill? We own our building and we _still_ couldn’t survive it. Small towns would be impacted to extinction.

We pride ourselves on fresh-made food, no frozen, no shortcuts. That takes hands in the kitchen. If you want local restaurants to exist in 5 years, this is the conversation we have to have.

We really enjoyed this special 4th of July with friends in Bells, TX. Now we must be honest.

Tejas Mexican Grill is considering closing its doors and starting a food trailer instead. After the last several years and dealing with small-town issues, we have to be real about the future.

We will continue to operate until it’s done. No more complaining that business is bad or slow. If you can’t afford to take advantage of complimentary margaritas/beer or buy-one-get-one-free dinners 😋, then maybe it’s time to move on.

Until the unthinkable happens, support your small-town businesses.
