UPDATE NUMBER 2: I just thought some might like to know that the father of one of the boys from yesterday showed up at our home this afternoon to talk to me about it, and then he let me know that he brought his son with him, plus one of the other boys from yesterday along to apologize to me and they were waiting in the vehicle while dad introduced himself to me and let me know he felt this was unacceptable behavior on their part. We all had a good chat and the boys were able to shed even more light on what happened yesterday. We all had a good discussion and I appreciated the parents who held their kids accountable. I also want to say I had several other parents reach out to me privately because they too wanted to determine if their own kids were involved.
P.S. - For any youngsters considering this kind of activity in the future, you should also remember how small of a community this is. Plus, I used to work for the school district and still have many friends teaching there. A few of them reached out privately to help ID the boys in the photos. I literally knew your names within a couple hours of my original post. 😄 Just keep that in mind next time you decide to act out. ;)
Thank you everyone for the support, the kind words, the post shares, amd your continued patronage at The Well Drive-In.
UPDATE: Either the same kids came back later or someone else did it later. But after I confronted the boys around 3:30 pm I went in and the toilet was clear. But by 6:00 p.m. the toilet bowl was completely filled up with paper toweling and even though the staff has pulled it all out and tried tirelessly to plunge it out it's still clogged and our own staff members can't even use the bathroom when they need to.
Public Service Announcement.
We are experiencing a high rate of vandalism in the bathroom that we leave open to the public this year. We've had people smear chocolate sauce and other condiments on the fixtures and we've had people set off stink bombs and very foul smelling spray. But what seems to be the most popular prank is stuffing very large amounts of paper towel and toilet paper into the toilet so that it gets clogged. I realize sometimes this can happen by accident when somebody has to use a lot of toilet paper but it's very obvious to us when it's been done on purpose.
As much as I hate to call this out it's often being discovered after a group of adolescent boys visits us. I'm all for kids being kids and having fun with harmless pranks but this is not harmless. It's harmful to our plumbing, it's burdensome to our staff who have to clean it up, and it's extremely rude to our fellow guests who need to use the same restroom. Just today I happened to be in the back hall around 3:30 pm and heard a lot of commotion in the bathroom hallway so I went to investigate and sure enough there were three boys laughing and exiting the hall and one of them remained in the bathroom. When he came out and saw me standing there he froze and closed the door behind him (instead of leaving it open for the next guest). When I asked him if everything was okay because I heard a commotion in the bathroom he said that he wasn't quite done and he needed to go back in. Then I heard him frantically cleaning up a mess inside while the rest of the boys made their way down the Main Street sidewalk because they rushed away when they saw me. At this time, I'm refraining from posting the photos I took of the boys I dealt with today.
I have also thus far refrained from putting a security camera in that hall because even though it wouldn't SHOW INSIDE the bathroom, I still feel like people would prefer a little privacy when entering and exiting the bathroom. But perhaps we can't have that level of privacy in our bathroom hallway anymore if this keeps happening on a regular basis.
While we do need to have a restroom available to our patrons because we have a dining area, we don't need to leave it unlocked. So if this continues we are going to have to have the bathroom door locked, forcing guests to come and ask for it to be opened for them each time they use it. We really don't want to go this route because it's more of a hassle for our customers and for our staff. However, if we have to we will. I'm putting this information out there because hopefully the pranksters will either see it or perhaps their parents will see it.
To the adults in our community I'm asking a huge favor that if you have young people from your household visiting our establishment without you, could you please have a talk with them and let them know that this behavior is not okay? Much appreciated, thank you!
