Last night we had the most amazing Chinese food (northern cuisine) that we’ve had in a long time…like since we moved back from China 🤩😋 (Orlando friends, address below!)

We ordered a few of our favorite dishes that we used to get at our beloved “Jiaozi Place” in Wuhan, a place that we ate at weekly (sometimes daily 🫣) when we lived there. Both of our kids were excited to try the dishes, but our son made a comment that stopped me in my tracks after trying one dish.

“It tastes…familiar.”

Even though it’s been seven years since we adopted him, his body remembers a specific flavor from his province. And the smile on his little face (and the fact that he ate the whole plate!) said it all.

Listen to adoptees on the importance of embracing and celebrating their birth culture. As an adoptive mom, I can’t say much more than that, since it’s an experience I’d personally never lived. But I do know that if we (parents) don’t show interest and excitement for another culture, then our children probably won’t either.

Their birth culture is literally in their DNA, their bodies and their brains. It’s a part of them, their lives before us. So it’s of utmost importance that we adopt all of them, their past history and their present, precious selves, into our family 🤍

Spoiler alert, the answer is only one word: chemicals 🥴

About 99% of the decaf beans on the shelf are soaked in chemicals to decaffeinate the beans. So when you make that evening cup of joe, you’re getting joe *plus* a chemistry lab…and you wonder why your body is literally rejecting it!

Thankfully, there is a better way so you don’t have to give up your beloved evening joe 😅 Our decaf beans are Swiss Water processed, meaning they are 99% decaffeinated using only…you guessed it, water! The beans taste exactly like their decaffeinated counterparts (we promise!), so no cardboard-aftertaste either 🙌

Here’s our decaffeinated (and chemically-free!) beans: https://haobaobaocoffee.com/collections/decaf-coffee?_pos=1&_psq=decaf&_psid=ca050eb00&_ss=e&_v=1.0

It’s our first Featured Family Friday of July 🇨🇴

Learn more about the Colon family, adopting a 4-year old boy from Colombia…

“My husband, Angel, and I live in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with our two children, Olivia and Levi. We have been married for over 15 years and have built our family around faith, service, and caring for others. Our daughter Olivia is a bright and compassionate teenager who loves art and has a heart for helping people. Our son Levi is a liver transplant recipient. In 2021, I had the privilege of becoming his living liver donor. That experience changed our family forever and gave us a unique understanding of the challenges children with complex medical needs face, as well as the incredible gift of hope that comes through loving support and medical care.

We are active members of our church, where we serve in worship, youth, and AV ministries. Our faith is central to who we are and guides the way we love, serve, and welcome others into our family.“

To learn more about their story, go to on Facebook

We will be donating $1 from every bag of coffee sold this month at haobaobaocoffee.com to the Colon’s Connected Hearts Ministry fund and we’d love for YOU to partner with this family to adopt their precious child! Meet our July ‘26 Featured Family: The Colon Family adopting a precious 4-year old boy from Colombia 🇨🇴

Learn more…

“We are the Colon family, a married couple with multiple children, adopting Zion, a boy from Colombia who received a kidney transplant on April 20, 2025. Because he is now immunocompromised, he has been hospitalized five times since his surgery, most recently spending three consecutive weeks in the hospital alone, without a family by his side.

We are not a family who stumbled upon adoption. God called us to it 20 years ago. The reason we are just now acting on that call is because our son Levi needed a liver transplant in September 2021, and we gave him everything we had until he was fully recovered in late 2025. The moment he was well, we moved forward.

We chose Zion because we are uniquely equipped to be his family. We already live post-transplant life. We understand immunosuppression, medication timing, lab monitoring, and how to advocate loudly in a hospital when something is wrong. What Zion needs most is a family who already knows his world without being taught it, and that is exactly what we are. Every dollar raised through this grant moves him one step closer to coming home.”

The man. The mission. The masterpiece.

If you’ve ever wondered what all Darren does, it’s pretty simple—e v e r y t h i n g. (Except taking pictures and posting on social media that is…he definitely doesn’t like being in the spotlight!) From ethically sourcing the beans to creating blends and roast profiles, to actually roasting the beans and grinding and sealing bags, as well as all the behind the scenes like book-keeping, contacting wholesale accounts, delivering, shipping, and SO much more!

Hao Bao Bao Coffee was birthed from his dream of providing the highest quality coffee to the public at reasonable prices while helping precious children and families 🤍

He’s truly a one-man-show and does it so well, so be sure to give him some love below!

Featured Charity Friday with Open Hearts for Orphans ❤️

This month (and there’s only a few days left!) we will be donating $1 from every bag of coffee sold at haobaobaocoffee.com to their Nurtured Hearts program. Learn more about it…

Each month we commit to care for at least two orphaned or abandoned babies in Uganda. The case cost for each is $2,000. This provides formula and feeding, plus medical care and helps fill all of their needs for one year.”

Baby Elowen and Indie are two recent intakes in their program and they need sponsorships! Please consider donating today to help us meet the goal of providing for these precious children. You can donate directly here and scroll down to their “Yes to Nutrition” donation button to support the Nurtured Hearts program: https://give.openheartsfororphans.org/decadeofyes
