Today we had the pleasure of hosting our senior citizens for their monthly cinema gathering. Once a month, they come together to enjoy a warm cup of tea, watch a movie, and share thoughtful conversations about the film afterwards.

It’s always a joy to welcome them and be part of creating a space for connection, laughter, and community. We look forward to many more memorable moments together. 💙🎬☕

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Sikelelwa Vuyeleni at Isivivana Centre.

In collaboration with berthamoviehouse , Sikelelwa facilitated a community screening for young people on 19 June, followed by a storytelling and creative empowerment workshop on 20 June.

As with all our guests and partners, we took the opportunity to give her a tour of the Centre, showcasing our facilities, programmes, and the work being done by the organisations that call Isivivana home.

We are always inspired by opportunities to connect creatives, community leaders, and young people through meaningful engagement and shared learning.

Here’s what Sikelelwa had to say about her experience at Isivivana Centre. 👇✨

Thank you, Raeesa Cassim, for stopping by Bertha Movie House during the Encounters Festival and sharing your thoughts on Her Khaltsha 🚲✨

We caught up with Raeesa after a screening of Her Khaltsha, an inspiring documentary that follows the young riders of the Khaltsha Cycles Bike Hub — Khayelitsha’s first all-girls cycling collective. Through their journeys on and off the bike, the film explores sisterhood, freedom, resilience, and the power of young women creating space for themselves while challenging stereotypes and reimagining what’s possible for their futures.

As Raeesa highlights in the video, the Khaltsha Cycling Academy is doing incredible work, using cycling as a tool for empowerment, mentorship, confidence-building, and community change for girls and young women in Khayelitsha.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special screening and conversation.

“Before you start filming, get to know the community.”

Director Joyce Nkgapele, director of Bridging the Disconnect, reflects on the importance of building relationships, listening deeply, and understanding the people at the heart of a story before the cameras begin rolling.

Documentary filmmaking is more than capturing moments—it’s about earning trust and creating space for authentic stories to be told.

🎬 Watch as Joyce shares why community engagement is an essential part of the filmmaking process.
