As I sat down today to write my post, I was easily distracted by the ladies semi final between the Ukranian Marta Kostyuk and Russian Mirra Andreeva. Needless to say they didn't shake hands, or even acknowledge one another, after the game. What a pity that war and politics should enter sport like that.

Anyhow, this French Open this year is most notable by the number of top seeds that have been knocked out. I have only heard of Andreeva on the 4 semi finalists before this year. The top players are already on their way home.

These top players this year have been protesting about the prize money at the Majors and are demanding more. I must confess that my initial reaction was that they are all plenty rich enough and it all sounded a bit greedy. But I did a bit of digging and it turns out that one of the major motivations is to increase the amount of money that is passed to the lower ranked players who really struggle to put together a tennis campaign.

The struggling tennis professional is a reality. As is the struggling artist, whose passion is not matched by the ability, or willingness, of patrons to pay for their work. Apart from anything, they need exposure

To this end the charcuterie business, On Board, who have held a couple of events at Lime Tree Cafe this year, have invited 8 artists to Lime Tree Cafe next Thursday 11th June at 6:00pm to exhibit their works.

For the fee of R145 you can enjoy a specially curated cup of their delicious food and speak to the artists who will he there to bring their art to life.

Lime Tree Cafe will offer a cash bar so you can sip your favourite cocktail or wine or bubbly or beer....of cool drink. And if you decide to stay for dinner we are offering a 15% discount on your food bill.

As that huge storm raged outside a couple of weeks ago and we battled on without electricity for 3 days, the generator pulling away and keeping some of the lights on, I have to confess to putting my head in my hands and wondering how many battles have to be fought until a peaceful lull ensues. Wave after wave of challenges rear up and have to be dealt with. And of course on the Thursday, after the electricity was finally restored, the water was cut off for the day.

I am a member of a Whatsapp group of riders who own powerful single cylinder enduro motorcycles. Yesterday one of the members posted a trip they had made in the Western Cape into the areas that had been inundated by the rains. My jaw dropped. Cape Town had a drenching. Other areas relatively close-by had Biblical floods. 600ml in 24 hours. Vineyards destroyed, bridges washed away, trees and cars carried off downstream like corks, houses simply disappearing. Massive landslides on the Ceres road. Peoples' livelihoods vanishing in a flash flood.

How lucky we are to still be here at Lime Tree Cafe. To still have your support. To have our health. And when my son asked me to help him with his new keyboard I was able to assist with a few hundred rand. And I looked at him and thought what a pleasure it is to be able to still be a part of his life and to be useful and see him grow into a young man. I am fortunate and have to be reminded to be grateful from time to time....electricity or no electricity.

Phew. Getting a bit philosophical here.

We will most likely never really know how humans conceptualised, designed and procured the raw materials for the great wonders of the world...ancient and modern. These were massive logistical undertakings. And of course lets not forget the immense human toll that it must have required....both voluntary and otherwise.

As for the motives. Well they range from defence, trade, religious devotion, institutionalised brutality to simply love and remembrance. Whatever the reasons for their being, they demonstrate the immense capacity that human beings had developed in times long ago. I think we constantly underestimate how smart and determined our ancestors were.

For example, apart from the sheer grandeur of Macchu Pichu, the engineering to be able to place massive blocks together so snugly that you cant fit a knife blade into the join just boggles the mind.

Or the city of Petra carved out of living rock in a desert where they tapped into natural water sources, channeled the water and grew the city into a thriving commercial hub. They had baths !!! In the desert !! And give a thought to the poor individuals that had only hand tools at their disposal, who were shown a raw rock face and told to carve out a city.

And the Great Wall of China running for thousands of kilometres. Imagine the disbelief of the engineer who was called to the Emperors Court and told to build a wall that would run along the entire northern border of imperial China. 'NO' was not a good answer in those days.

There are of course much smaller achievements, some of which are enjoyed on a daily basis in their millions.

We have added one of the small modern wonders of the world to our repertoire. Pastel de Nata. These fiendishly delicious treats originate from Portugal. The origin is so interesting that I have copied the text from Wikipedia and included it here :

Pastéis de nata tarts are pastries inspired by an original recipe called pastéis de Belém, which were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in the civil parish of Belém, in Lisbon. At the time, convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg-whites for starching clothes, such as friars and nuns' religious habits. It was quite common for monasteries and convents to use the leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries, resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country.

We have sourced ours from Johannesburg where they are made to the original recipes and style. I hope you enjoy them.

I was going to write about Pasteis de Nata and the fact that we have found a top notch supplier for these other worldly delights.

But yesterdays tasting of specials snookered that idea.

Because of the 3 day power cuts and concerns about our fridges being switched off, we delayed the preparation of the bi weekly specials which explains my lack of post on Thursday.

And was it worth the wait !!!

We have made a rich and winter-beating lamb goulash soup, rich with flavour and perfect for this new cold climate we are experiencing. R80.00

The Canadian sole is prepared with sh*ttake and shimeji mushhrooms (and some local button mushrooms for good measure) in a cream, white wine, onion and garlic sauce served on garlic mash. Just delicious and hugely flavoursome. R245.00

Our pork belly is cooked in our freshly ground 5 spice sauce (made up of aniseed, cardamom, cloved, fennel and black pepper also freshly ground) over a potato bake and fine green beans and served with the 5 spice reduction. Outrageously tasty. A big treat for the tastebuds. R190.00

And lastly we have our fettuccine tossed with prawns, asparagus and champagne and fresh herb cream. I have to admit that I lifted this recipe from the Daily Maverick who often feature superb and readily makeable recipes which offer light relief from the usual fare of corruption and malfeasance. I hope they don't mind. R190.00

And to finish off the specials we have the pizza topped with beef sirloin, roast peppers, mushrooms and goats cheese. Need I say more. R195.00.

And for something sweet we have made a warm apple and berry pudding served with custard. R80.00

So there they are. Available until Wednesday 27th of May.

This is really good food so please come along and try it.

Starry Starry Night.

On a moonless night, when staring into the heavens from our refuge in the Kouebokkeveld it is hard not get lost in the immensity of our universe. Because there is no town nearby the stars are so bright the sky looks grey and not black, and they even cast a shadow on the ground. The occasional comet flits across, and numerous satellites reflect the suns setting light hurrying along on their path doing whatever they do.

And while this night sky is breathtaking, it is even surpassed by the night sky over the coldest place in the country, Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Sutherland is home to SALT, the South African Large Telescope, which has the honour of being the largest diameter single lense telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. On the plateau where SALT is housed is also an array of smaller telescopes operated by international universities, private persons and other institutions. The place is positively heaving with astronomers.

It is also positively heaving with sheep because their fur coats allow them to withstand the withering cold that sweeps across the plains and through the valleys. This is the same biting wind that a couple of weeks ago greeted myself and my friend Lawrence as we rode our motorbikes from the Kouebokkebeld to Sutherland. As the altitude increased the wind got colder and by the time we arrived at our destination it was not a moment to soon.

Anyhow, back to the sheep.

There are a couple of must visits in Sutherland. The observatory is one with its exhibition of stars, technology and ancient fossils laid down when the karoo was a huge inland sea (sadly the night we had booked for night sky viewing at the observatory was rainy). The Blue Moon restaurant is another, not only for its delicious food but for the company of its manager whose warmth and conversation kept us well entertained. The bar at the Sutherland Hotel should be visited if not only for the bizarre trophy of a giraffes head sticking out of the wall, well over a metre long. It defines the word incongruous. The other is the butchery. A typical Karoo butchery with its old floppy doors, piles of braai wood in one corner and the heavy small of meat.

Once we got her chatting the wry butcheress (butcheress or butcher or butcher's wife....??) warmed to us uitlanders and before long she let us know that her husband used to farm sheep but they opened the butchery as an outlet. They soon found that serving customers from the relative comfort of their shop beats chasing sheep around the veld in sub zero temperatures. She also let us know that her husband knows which farms have good grazing and therefore the best quality meat, and which have poor grazing. With this little nugget of local intelligence I proceeded to buy almost all of their lamb shanks with a view of offering them as one of our bi-weekly specials. And now the time has come.........

Today I received a statement from a supplier who included a quote from Nelson Mandela....

'For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others'. Lovely words which certainly strike a chord these days.

The 70's rock band 10CC had another take on Freedom in their song 'I wanna rule the world'....
