Sorry Homies …. this gorgeous little shop does not exist anymore. The delightful Curiositea has taken the place of Java Rock.
Java Rock was a haven where you could have delicious coffee and cake, buy a gift for a chum and take a deep breath before continuing your day. It was the ‘happy place’ for many. I have fond memories of Java, a space of creativity and warm welcomes, made possible with the help of my husband, Francois, who always has the vision and bravery to make good things possible.
I think of the excitement leading up to Christmas holidays when Jo’burg arrived with endless Christmas gift lists that would would be ticked off in no time after a visit to Java Rock.
It was always so gratifying to watch the shelves empty by customers that loved what was curated for them to fall in love with and buy. It made up for the pre-season nerves of stocking up too much or not well enough.
I miss you Java Rock, warm cosy winter mornings and breezy , open summer afternoons,
Zimkita ( the excellent barista and baker who we have back with us at The Rock ) and dearest Seillah who were deeply loved by all the customers, my children who were still at Hermanus High at the time and would come to Java for a quick lunch and do some
homework before going home. The walls they helped to paint and the coffees they tried to make. Rosie and Daniel earning a couple of R5 coins for clearing tables on busy Saturday mornings, Rosie and
Akeecha singing at the counter and nibbling June’s famous carrot cake. Francois pulling up on the red line with the Landie packed with kids, Jesse and Novak on the way to the beach.
Coffee and Kyk (not many people got that), gifts, a meeting spot, a quick getaway to reboot your day and sweet happy memories that remind you that everything is transient, nothing lasts forever and that the time flies when you are having fun.
