Warm up at our precinct tomorrow night as Keyes Art Night moves from archive to stage, from memory into the present.

🧣 In the Atrium, the Makers Table, in collaboration with Johannesburg In Your Pocket City Guide and Open Window invites you to work directly with archival photographs from Marc Latilla's Johannesburg Then and Now. Hand-colour, collage, draw, and reimagine the city through your own lens — from impossible futures to deeply personal interventions.

🧣 In Gallery 1, Groundwork enters its final weeks with works shaped by stone, dust, carbon and clay.

🧣Aspire Art opens its winter season with Holding Time: Collecting Home from Afar, a private collection built over years of collecting from abroad, alongside the Day and Evening Modern and Contemporary Art sales on 18 June led by Walter Battiss's Spirit of Africa and works by major South African artists.

🧣 At Lizamore & Associates and BKhz, two exhibitions trace identity, memory, love and the spaces between thought and feeling.

🧣 And at Everard Read Gallery Johannesburg, Bag Factory celebrates 35 years with When We Gather...the ordinary becomes extraordinary, opening Thursday 4 June from 17:00.

An unmissable evening, with something for everyone✨

This Keyes Art Night begins with a city still being imagined.

📍In the Atrium, the Makers Table, in collaboration with Johannesburg In Your Pocket and Open Window, invites you to work directly with archival photographs from Marc Latilla's Johannesburg Then and Now. Hand-colour, collage, draw, and reimagine the city through your own lens, from impossible futures to deeply personal interventions.

📍In Gallery 1, Groundwork enters its final weeks. Spend time with an exhibition shaped by stone, dust, carbon and clay, and the questions they leave behind about construction, memory and time.

📍And just around the corner at CIRCA Gallery, Bag Factory Art marks 35 years with When We Gather...the ordinary becomes extraordinary — a fundraising group exhibition bringing together alumni and current artists from three and a half decades of studio practice.

📍Lizamore & Associates - A Small Kind of Magic brings together Rosemary Marriott, Moloko Mabotja and Jenny Nijenhuis in a quiet exploration of identity, memory and the things we absorb before we have language for them.

📍BKhz - Stephen Tebogo Langa opens Until Love Makes Sense — paintings that hold love in uncertain, shifting moments, somewhere between thought and feeling.

From archive to stage, material to memory, the Mile moves through different ways of seeing and being.

Come for one stop or stay for the whole evening.

There's a certain alignment between the city outside and what's currently unfolding inside Gallery 1.

As Johannesburg continues to shift and rebuild around us, Daily Maverick's recent feature by Laurice Taitz-Buntman reflects on the next phase of Keyes Art Mile — tracing the precinct's evolution from a long-held vision to the large-scale redevelopment now underway at the corner of Cradock and Keyes avenues.

That sense of change feels deeply connected to the Groundwork exhibition, currently on show at Gallery 1. Curated by Ann Roberts from the Tortilis Collection, the exhibition brings together works shaped through processes of erosion, layering, construction and transformation — engaging with materials that carry both physical weight and cultural memory.

Seen within the context of a precinct in transition, the exhibition becomes a quiet reflection on how cities are made over time: through material, movement, imagination and the people who continue to shape them.

Thank you to Laurice Taitz-Buntman and Daily Maverick for such a thoughtful reflection on the city, its pace, and the people continuing to shape it.

📍 Groundwork is currently on show at Gallery 1, Keyes Art Mile, till Mid-June

At Kanpai the experience is unhurried in the best way.

Each bite is thoughtful, balanced, and made to be enjoyed slowly, offering a moment to step out of the rush and into something more intentional.

At BGR, cold days turn into focused sessions.

It's the kind of spot where you can lock in for a grind, then break for something warm, cheesy, and properly satisfying in between. No fuss, just good food and a steady place to get things done.

Marble Johannesburg Cobb salad looks like a salad… until it turns up with chicken, bacon, Healey's mature cheddar, soft-boiled egg and avocado.

Finished with honey and mustard dressing, it's fresh, filling, and quietly doing the most.
