In early January 2012, owner and avid local fisherman, Preggie Pilay and his wife, Jeanie decided to bring their successful supplier and takeaway business to a whole new level with the opening of THE FISH INN Restaurant in Shelly. But let’s just back up here a little bit, because honestly, I found the whole origin and development of THE FISH INN most intriguing. THE FISH INN in Marburg quickly est

ablished itself as the premier spot to source local fresh fish as well as an abundant supply of Mozambican shellfish and West coast seafood items. You see THAT is the interesting thing about THE FISH INN, the fact that their stock of line fish is actually SOUTH COAST local line fish. Having a commercial fishing permit allows Preggie and his crew of approximately 35 fishermen, to launch from either Hibberdene or Port Edward and bring us fresh line fish from our own waters. So now you can see that when he says “Anything Fresher is still Swimming”, he’s not only being witty with his slogan, he’s also being very truthful. So now with a full catch of fresh fish from the lower south coast waters, it’s taken back to THE FISH INN in Marburg where, with the use of some of the most advanced equipment and processes, the stock is prepared and packaged for sale at the Marburg shop and now also supplied directly to their new restaurant in Shelly Beach.

So what are THE FISH INN restaurant house specialties? When Clint and I visited them and were treated to a sampling of their LINE FISH PLATTER (R175) which included grilled fresh line fish (of course); we had Slinger and Dorado, grilled and spiced prawns, fried battered calamari and chips.

The FISH CURRY is another dish that THE FISH INN is very proud of. Now to be honest, when I go out to dinner, I NEVER order fish curry; I don’t know why, but Preggie was so descriptive of the dish, so very proud of the quality of it, that I just couldn’t say no. And let me tell you something, he was not kidding around. I love curry; and this is probably now my favourite curry on the South Coast! Made with boneless fresh line fish (of course) in a traditional South Indian curry sauce with tangy tamarind gravy, brinjal and coriander. Hot? I don’t think so. On a scale of 1 to 10 I’d say it starts on about 2 and warms to a glow of about 4. But that’s just me. The curry single portion is R65 and you can have it with Basmati rice (R12) which I had, or a roti.

The Takeaway boasts the best FISH CAKES (R5.95 ea) on the coast, crumbed plain or spicy and deep fried. Of course their FRESH RED FISH FILLETS (3 fillets and chips R33) in a special house recipe batter and deep fried are winning in popularity now as well.

So there you have it: THE FISH INN (Marburg) is the place to buy your fresh fish and seafood ingredients, and THE FISH INN restaurant (Shelly Beach) is THE luxury dining venue to enjoy locally caught fresh South Coast line fish in a comfortable and elegant environment.
Just remember: “If they couldn’t catch it, you can’t buy it!

Now let’s talk a bit about this new restaurant in Shelly Beach. You may remember that the shop used to be a pizza place? Or a video shop? Which is probably where all the confusion lies, that folks have not “twigged” that the new tenant is so much more than just a takeaway? THE FISH INN restaurant is aimed at being an affordable fine dining establishment.

The décor is elegantly modern with a natural overtone. The plush carpet and cool mirror-polished stainless steel ceilings bring the décor concept together to bring you a world between modern living and natural comfort. The restaurant seats no more than 30 patrons in the air conditioned dining area, separated from the takeaway by a décor natural rock and waterfall element, offering a quiet, comfortable dining experience while still offering the popular takeaway service.
