What do we mean by “Production”? This is a common term if you’re a musician, entertainer, or venue, but if you don’t see how the proverbial sausage is made you may be unfamiliar with this usage. Production simply means the various costs that a club incurs to put on - or produce - a show. Sound engineers, door personnel, and so on. Venues then typically subtract these costs from ticket sales - a necessity to stay in business, and a totally ok, industry-norm thing to do. However, it often means two things: 1) clubs can take less risks insofar as who they book to perform, since the venue will eat the cost of production if there aren’t enough ticket sales (which is unsustainable), and 2) Bands may have a nice turnout for their show and still barely make any cash (and guess what? Guitar strings, drum sticks, gas, cats, life, and so on does require a little cheddar, even if our artists hearts are sometimes reluctant to admit it).
