After sunday's overly emotional post, lets keep it a little light today. Because its TUESDAY BAAYBEEEE! AND WE'RE STILL BEIN SWEET ON OTHER FOLKS IN THIS TOWN WHO DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT (because if you still haven't heard, or if this is somehow your first time reading one of these -- being a small business is a TOUGH gig, especially these days). More and more little shops keep closing week after week and its tough to watch your town change and get increasingly... gentrified? Is that the word i want? You know what i mean. Like, there's a Target downtown now. What the hell is that all about? Anyways, without any more hemmin' or hawin' --

I have no idea how the 40 Watt Club does what it does and remains as awesome as it is. Everybody knows they're the coolest music venue in town (don't even come at me with the Georgia Theater -- you were way cooler before you burned down and we all know it), but what you maybe don't know is that every single person i've ever met that works there -- and i've met A LOT of the folks over the years -- can only be described a "righteous dudes". Especially the HBIC Jim Wilson. Let me tell you a little story that i take every opportunity to tell people because it meant so damn much to me.

First off, just so you're aware -- we are directly across the street from each other. We serve coffee to their folks pretty frequently -- sometimes we're lucky enough to serve some of the acts coming through (Patton Oswalt coming and hanging out at my cafe and chatting with my about my stupid cocktail names that are all pop-culture references was a particular highlight of my career). To say we're acquainted with each other is an understatement. This relationship has certain perks that you just don't get in other industries -- athens service industry is pretty cool that way. So when one of my favorite bands of all time came through a number of years ago (Jimmy Eat World -- if you grew up in the 90s, you also love them), i was invited to be "put on the list" so that i could come check out the show after i was able to get out from behind the bar.

Now, if you know me at all, you know i have a little bit of apprehension around large groups of people -- i wouldn't go as far as saying i'm enochlophobic but i certainly get very anxious when i'm stuck in large groups. Buses, airports, live music, even crowded restaurants are all anxiety inducing nightmares for me. So, while i love live music -- my desire to actually go to a show is usually pretty hampered by this. Despite having lived in Athens for almost 20 years, i can count on one hand the number of shows i've actually gone to. So when i was invited to be put on the list (because they knew i loved Jimmy -- i told you they're ritgheous dudes over there) i politely declined because i knew i wouldn't have a good time. And you know what the people at the 40 Watt did for me? They put me on the list anyways, insisted i come by after my shift, and let me stand in the back behind the sound board where the only other person near me was the sound guy and i got to finally see what turned out to be one of the best shows i've ever seen. Jimmy Eat World knew the crowd was a bunch of 30 somethings and they played THE HITS. Basically the entirety of Bleed American and Futures with a little bit of Clarity thrown in for good measure. And i would have missed it had it not been for (probably in their mind) the tiny act of kindness that they extended to me just to make me feel comfortable. Tiny for them, huge beyond measure for me. That's something i can't ever pay back. That's something that doesn't happen in other towns. That's the kind of thing that i point to when i people ask why i still live in my college town over 20 years later. Because there is still a number of locals and townies that really look out for each other. I think the word is COMMUNITY. Athens still has it if you know where to look.

Which is ultimately the reason i'm still doing this -- because you never know when you'll have another chance to give another homie their flowers. And the 40 Watt deserves a whole bouquet -- only the finest red roses. Because we love you guys. We're blowin' kisses at you from across the street. You can't dodge them all.

Ooops, i forgot to keep it light. Oh well. I am what i am.

Its Sunday -- and i've been sitting on this all weekend. Sometimes you hear news and you think "this doesn't really have anything to do with a board game cafe. i shouldn't post this to a social media account for a board game cafe".

And then at some point you remember that you've never taken the concept of "work social media" all that seriously, because come on -- its a small town cafe with reach to literally hundreds of people. So you can kind of say whatever you want and it'll be fine. So buckle up. I'm gonna say something.

It will not be short.

Did ya'll hear BioWare closed? The game dev. that brought us Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Baulder's Gate 1&2, KotOR, and a few others that i'm sure nobody really wants to hear me go on about (BUT ANTHEM DESERVED BETTER -- both in reception from us and in its treatment by BioWare/EA). Some of the greatest games and stories of all time.

I love movies, and i love games -- but more than anything i love the stories they tell. Yeah -- books are also neat and we love them, but i'll be 100% here and say i'm way more likely to take a shot on a game or a movie i know nothing about than i am on a book that i know nothing about. Call that a time commitment thing maybe, but i've always been more drawn to visual storytelling more than the written word. And there's a couple of things that i can point to that are probably my reason for that. Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas, BioWare, and Squaresoft. The first movie story that blew my pants off? Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. The first movie to visually melt my brain? Jurassic Park. The first video game story that truly rivaled a story i would get from a book or movie? Final Fantasy Tactics.

The first game that did all of those at once? Mass Effect 2.

What this game did to my teenaged brain i'll never fully recover from. A sweeping space opera that rivaled (if not surpassed) the story from star wars -- a galaxy ending threat, a ton of INCREDIBLE alien species, anti-capitalist messaging, THE coolest ship in media, worlds to explore, biotic powers to learn, guns to shoot, relationships to forge, Garrus Vikarian, Mordin Solus, Legion, Tali'Zora Vas Normandy, Joker, Anderson -- take a breath. jesus.

That's right -- my first BioWare game was Mass Effect 2 -- not even 1. I was aware of the other games, but they were all computer games (OR X BOX, YUCK), and up until this point in my life i was mostly a console gamer (World of Warcraft would change that slowly). But this unlocked a back catalogue of games for me that kept me obsessed for the next 20ish years of my life. KotOR gave me the first truly great Star Wars game. Dragon Age gave me one of my first dark fantasy worlds that reminded me of Excalibur. Baulders Gate got me into DnD for christ's sake. Where would i be without these games?

I'd probably be playing football.

And you'd be reading some other Board Game Cafe general manager's social media post about how much BioWare meant to them. You don't do what i do in life without being a "particular sort of person". But also, i'm not special here. I'm not unique in this. If you grew up a little weird -- loving fantasy, and science fiction, and stories, and video/board games -- if you ever felt like you couldn't share your hobbies with people because they'd make fun of you -- if you ever felt like you were on the outside looking in as a kid because people didn't really "get" you -- if you had trouble making friends sometimes and the relationships in these games did something to you because you could finally say the right thing or be good enough -- if life was tough sometimes and you needed a world you could escape to in your teens or 20s because this world just wasn't cutting it for you. That's a tale as old as time for a lot of us. I think the term for a lot of us now is "neurodivergent", when we were kids its was "nerd" or "freak" or "weirdo" or "spaz" (and some less polite terms -- it was the 90s). BioWare gave me something -- gave a lot of us something that made me feel UNDERSTOOD. These were games just for me. Finally, something hitting all the interest, and i knew that if i met somebody out there wearing an N7 jacket that WE would be friends. How could we not be? I didn't realize immediately that in a town like Athens, that N7 jacket was actually a N7 tattoo, or a painting of a Qunari by an artist at bishop park christmas market, or a pair of dangly lightsaber earrings one red, one purple. There's a lot of weird in this town. Maybe its why i feel at home here still, 21 years later.

Whoops, things got too real. Anyways, it sucks to see another goliath of my childhood go away. But i would rather see them have all their projects cancelled and preserve what i have then having an evil company like EA keep pumping out half-assed replicas of something i love.

Keelah se'lai, BioWare.

It is Tuesday, again. And you know what that means, right? We're tippin' our hat to other homies in town that deserve your support (in case somehow you haven't heard the good word, small businesses are a tough gig -- especially these days). Without any further hemmin and hawwin -

You know what we don't talk about nearly enough in this town? How there's not a Starbucks on every single corner. I mean, don't get me wrong, downtown isn't what it used to be -- back in the day when basically every shop in the district was a locally owned small business is a thing that's going by the wayside (i could go on about this for hours but that's not what we're talking about right now). But there's one industry that survived longer than most in the battle of maintaining that good ol' fashioned Athens originality -- coffee shops. We've got Walkers, we've got Sips, we've got Molly's, by the grace of god we still have Hendershots (glad somebody stepped up and kept that place going) -- hell, we've got a wealth of our own little coffee shops that all have their own vibe and THANG goin on. And you know who we have squarely to thank for that? Jittery Joe's.

Now, nobody freak out about that -- because listen. LISTEN. How many of you started off in the coffee world by getting a job at one of the local Jittery Joes? I know i did. I know a bunch of people who did. And while the company has taken some twists and turns over the years from their original downtown location -- I miss the days where you could get downtown really early (or maybe still be downtown from the night before) and you could smell Charlie roasting coffee across downtown if you were lucky -- they have been a staple, a rock, a monument of Athens for as long as most of us can remember. And its created a coffee culture that's weirdly strong for such a small town that you don't even see in bigger cities. I started off over at the Eastside location on Barnett Shoals after getting out of college and having no prospects for a job (thanks 2008 for a "once in a lifetime" economic crash that i've now seen 3 of). And here we are, 20 years later for me -- over 30 for Joes -- still doing the damn thing. And wouldn't you know it, turns out that some old college buddies of mine are the ones helming the ship these days. If you're reading this, love you boys. You know who you are.

So really, lift that bright orange cup and toast to our home town heroes. A lot of us wouldn't be here without them. And its about damn time we give them their flowers. My hats not just tipped, my hat is all the way off to you, Jittery Joes. You've done much more for this town than just supplying us with a steady supply of caffiene.

IMPORTANT PSA ATTACHED AT THE BOTTOM (seriously):

To anybody else who got that lovely little stomach bug that's been going around Athens:

I feel your pain -- this is no fun. how dare it take me down on my one real day off.

Sincerely,
The most recent victim of the great 2026 "bug"

PSA:
What happened to commercials having jinggles that ROCKED? You remember what i mean, right? All i'm sayin is bring back "Pizza in the Mornin'", Bagel Bits -- bring back "Freshmaker", Mentos. Bing back "Like Mike", Gatorade. And most of all...

Bring back "Like a Rock", Chevy. You could help heal America. We need this. We all need this.

I'm afraid i'm going to be talking about this a lot over the next few weeks. What the hell happened? Remember when companies actually had to WORK to sell us things? Capitalism went and got lazy.

WE'RE BACK BAYBEEEEEE! (Monday -- we're back ON MONDAY)

After taking a week off due to events beyond my control (grumble grumble somebody BOUGHT OUT THE CAFE FOR AN EVENING, HOW DARE THEY MAKE ME WORK grumble grumble) it's time to run it back -- shuffle up and be prepared to sling some spells! ITS COMMANDER NIGHT -- same deal as always, I've got some free boosters for you jokers if you just come on out, and I've got even MORE free boosters if you have the goodness in your heart to also buy something from us (you know MTG is thirsty work, you deserve a tasty bevvy). So come on out, and have a finite supply of booster packs, but the first 10 people shuffled up and slingin' will see their punctuality rewarded.

As always, love you. Say hi to your momma n' them.

Sometimes we have to stop and appreciate something perfect in its simplicity. Name something better than a simple grilled cheese sandwich. A grilled cheese WITH tomato? Ok, fine, you're right, sometimes when you're feeling fancy, putting that little bit of acid to cut the richness of the cheese is just *chef's kiss*. Be real nice to us, and we will make one for you. You choose the cheese, we'll choose the tomato. Love you. Say hi to your momma and them.
