This morning’s project, to finish assembling this little coop for our newest chicken addition. This will be a temporary home for her and what’s great about it is that it’s on wheels so that I can move her around to different areas so that she can be on the grass and in dirt for her dirt/dust baths. She will be in this little house of hers temporarily, more about her on another day.
Oh, and the directions are a joke. It’s partially done and this almost 65 year old lady hasn’t needed “a powerful man to easily turn screws.” Their typos are getting in this Katie Gibbs girl’s nerves. I sometimes miss my typos in my own posts but that’s because I am writing them on my phone and as soon as I notice them or someone tells me, I edit them.

Have a beautiful day everyone!

You know how I always say it’s never dull around here? This morning was proof.

Johanna had already been here to open up the farmstand and had headed to Augusta to our wholesale food purveyor to pick up items we need for prep (the farmstand is busy). I went out to the back barn to do animal related things and could hear a soft bird chirp coming from somewhere inside the barn. I did the old listen, hear it, take two steps and listen again, hear it, take another step, it stopped, step again and hear it, and now doubt which direction I thought it had come from. I ended up sending Johanna a text asking if she could please come back to help, she said yes because she had only made it as far as the bank in Wiscasset. Phew!

She began the same listen, two steps, listen again and sure enough after a little while we found a phoebe fledgling that had landed in a barrel holding fiberglass poles used for staking electric fencing. We slowly removed poles trying to not move or hurt it. Finally she was able to reach the little bird. She put it on the floor of the barn and it flew right out to Momma Phoebe. We were relieved, happy and then we heard another chirp. Johanna looked at me and said, “&|- # Deb, you’ve got to be kidding.” It was coming from the same corner of the barn. Listen, hear, two steps, you know the rest. Good gravy it was in the same barrel only further down so we continued to pull the posts out gently one at a time. There it was, a sibling, a tad more wedged in with a wing to the side. I said if we need to, we will call Avian Haven, a bird rehab in Freedom, Maine.

Johanna placed it on the mat and after a few seconds instead of flying out of the barn, it flew to the back and continued to get itself into places that it made it hard to reach. Johanna finally caught it and out of the barn it flew.

I’ve been watching Momma Phoebe at her nest for weeks, building it, sitting on her eggs and then feeding her babies. I could tell they were big enough to fledge and sure enough they were.

Byebye birdies, please come back next spring and hatch more babies.

It’s a small world. The other day I was walking in Boothbay Harbor when I overheard a woman saying, “that’s the woman from Sunset Hill Farm.” I recognized Carol & Leslie as I had met them a couple of years ago when they were at the farmstand. We had chatted that day and it turned out that one of them had worked at Fidelity with George in Boston years ago-this is the small world example.

As we stood there at the top of Boothbay House Hill Road, I joked saying that I must be famous since I had been recognized on the street. I introduced my neighbor John to them and they remembered my mentioning him in posts about the farm, I told him he is famous too.

They introduced us to their friend whose first name escapes me-I apologize (Kathleen?) Brewer. We had a fun chat about the pigs and the other goings on around here that they have seen in our posts. It turns out I have another small world connection with this friend they had just introduced me to but I didn’t have time to tell them story.

This little farmstand has brought THE MOST WONDERFUL people into our lives, people we would not otherwise have met. Then I think about all the folks we’ve not met because we are on the honor system in the farmstand and miss most of the people who stop by. What a fun ride Johanna and I are on thanks to the farmstand, and thank you❤️
~Deb

Many of you know the stories shared here about our knucklehead cat Jackson. Today I was told a story about him that made me burst out laughing. You may remember that I have mentioned in posts our 15 year old next door neighbor John who helps me here from time to time with projects. Well, his grandparents are visiting for the weekend and the room there are staying in is in the ground floor. His grandmother told me that around 3am this morning they woke to hear scratching outside the cat door and feared that one of the two family kittiens had somehow been shut outside by mistake. When they looked to see, they saw Jackson trying to get in the cat door! Can you imagine?
I laughed and told her that she should have let him in because he loves to snuggle in bed and be the “little spoon.”
He wears a Tractive tracker on his collar so that I can see where he goes when he is out and about. There isn’t a time stamp on his route but I can see in the screenshot that he was by their house (yellow arrow) only once in the last 24 hrs which was obviously when he was wanting to be invited inside. Oh Jackson, you really are something else. ❤️
