Happy Monday! What a great sermon we heard from Pastor Will yesterday as we continued our “The Word Made Flesh” series, going through the Gospel of John and discussing Giving Life! We dived into John 5: 1-23, looking at the 3rd sign/miracle in revealing who Jesus is.
There was a pool in Jerusalem where a group of disabled people lay. One man had been there for 38 years. Jesus approached the man. He was just minding his own business. Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed. The man had no faith; he just wanted to sit there and get better by getting in the water, but couldn't. Despite all of that, Jesus chose to heal him. Jesus performs a sign. He tells the man to pick up his mat and walk. And the man’s response is to just pick up his mat and leave as he was told. Some Jewish leaders weren't happy since it was the Sabbath. The man just tells them that Jesus told him to do it.
The point in this story is Jesus. The man is used to reveal the identity of Jesus. Jesus chose to heal him. The man had no faith before the encounter, and still had no faith after. And yet Jesus heals him anyway.
Don’t miss Jesus. The reality is that he is the Son of God, and he gives life to whoever he feels the desire to. He chooses who to give life to. And not because we have earned it. That is grace.
What is your response to him giving you life? Don’t just walk away.
Join us Sunday for Pastor Will’s last sermon before going on sabbatical. We want to see you there!
Sunday at 10 AM at 308 1st Ave E, Jerome, ID 83338.
