Enjoy 16 German taps, a wide variety of bottled imports and Oktoberfest-like fun every weekend. The Essen Haus opened back in September of 1983 in the remodeled Wilson Street Dinner Theater, best known as the original site of the Hoffman House. Since then, it has become its own staple in Madison culture. Over the past 30+ years, we have provided German food, bier and fun to visitors and Madisonian

s alike. The historic building offers old-world charm combined with modern day entertainment. In addition to our usual German fare, we serve several holiday meals and host a variety of events throughout the year, including our very own Oktoberfest festival. We also enjoy celebrating the events in your life. The Essen Haus has two private banquet halls equipped to accommodate both large and small groups. We have had the pleasure of hosting rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, retirement parties, celebration of life gatherings, University banquets and a variety of other special gatherings. Our banquet menu offers a wide selection of hors d'oeuvres, German and American entrees, and several bier/cocktail options that can be customized to make your experience truly unique. Plan your special gathering or simply stop down for dinner, drinks and a fun night out. Hot soft pretzels accompany every meal and our rotating German tap bier selections are ready to fill your half-liter stein, 1 liter boot or stein, the ever popular 2 liter "Das Boot", or even the 5 liter stein every Tuesday-Sunday.
