We are SO excited to invite you all to Adair Finucaneâs art opening this Friday June 5th from 5-7pm.
A word from the artist:
âSave for Goldie, Waiting, each piece in this show was created following my daughterâs birth in
August of 2022. Pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period are different for everyone. Despite
many moments of awe, joy, and gratitude, my transition to motherhood was overshadowed by
darkness and disconnection. I am grateful to have surfaced from the underworld stronger, wiser,
and more embodied.
Most of this art was made in the last year and a half, the pieces expressions of personal rebirth, and
my passion for cultivating beauty and self-love. I finally gave myself the gift of painting in oil;
a delight! Spent countless hours listening to q***r memoirs and historical fantasy novels while
obsessing over tiny shiny things; what joy and satisfaction beaded embroidery brings! And to collab
with an up-and-coming 3-year-old art star? Humbling! A pleasure!
These pieces are also statements of resistance against a dominant culture that desecrates the
Mother. While perinatal mental health is finally getting more attention, these issues are
embedded in â and often responses to â our toxic systems.
From shortsighted, profit-drivenpoisoning of our Mother Earth,
to mortality and health disparities for Black birthing women and q***r & trans people,
to the US being the one industrially developed country not to guarantee paid postpartum leave,
no wonder weâre angry.
Yet anger on its own is a poor tool for social change. Itâs the creating â for me, through visual art,
singing, dancing, and performing â that fuses love into anger,
birthing a force thatâs fiercely creative in favor of blind destructiveness.
I hope you, too, keep leaning into the practices that bring darkness into the light.
Awe na mnĂĄ! (translation: Praise the women!; Irish)â
We are so grateful to have her artwork in the space and we hope you can come see it IRL!
We have also listed the spaces that will be participating in First Friday and we now have First Friday maps available on our back resource board! Swing by, pick one up and be sure to check out some other shows as well. â¤ď¸
