untitled - Warren O’Brien ~2017

I bought this work from the Gala in 2018, I had seen dozens of Warrens paintings in the past, but this one really stuck with me and I knew I had to have it.
Arts Project is a great organization that provides studio access and gallery representation to artists with intellectual disabilities.
This painting has held the spot opposite the bar for about 5 years, and no matter how much time I’ve spent looking at it I always find something new.
Warrens work is always really captivating, and I love how this one changes when the afternoon light hits it.

Invasion day has rolled around again, and all of us here at the Aldie are taking some time today to reflect on what we can do to try and fight the racist and colonial structures that are embedded in this country.

It's a frightening time all over the world right now, and the anger anyone with a conscience feels at the way colonial systems are harming so many is just.
But we also have to be hopeful, that being kind and working hard can reverse the damage being done.

This year we are trying to do our bit to pay the rent by making a donation to an organization that's very local to the bar.

ACES is a non profit, Aboriginal community controlled org that cares for Elders both in residential care, outreach and social support.

They are located in Brunswick east, and we want to encourage any locals to the bar to check out their website acesinc.org.au to consider joining us in supporting their critical work.

No date to celebrate.

On Invasion Day this year, The Alderman is donating to three separate organizations that we feel provide important services to first nations people.

This is in an effort to pay the rent, and to acknowledge that while we profit every day from the structures and history of colonialism, we want to remain committed to trying to learn about and dismantle these systems in our minds and business.

We are donating a thousand dollars each to:

Sisters Inside, a Queensland based org that works to support the human rights and needs of women and girls caught in a racist system of incarceration.

The Dhadjowa Foundation, which provides support for the families of those killed in custody.

Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women’s Council is an Anangu led org that provides a range of services across 26 communities covering 350,000 sq km.
(Receipts are incoming for this, I'm having a little trouble with their payment portal)

While we encourage all businesses to use a portion of their profits to pay the rent, we also understand that this is by far the smaller portion of the work we all need to do, and we vouch that we will continue to try and educate ourselves and others to the true histories and realities of the violence of colonial occupation and our own culpability within it.

Sovereignty was never ceded, it always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

This invasion day we chose three organizations we found fit with the community at the Alderman to support.

Black Rainbow is a Darwin based org originally focused on su***de prevention but now provides a variety of support for q***r Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

The Dhadjowa foundation provides support to the families of those who have died in custody.

Djirra is an Abbotsford based org that provides a wide range of services, mostly to people identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander People, as well as those affected by domestic violence.

We encourage you to do your own research if you are looking for ways to pay the rent, but hope this could be helpful.

We profit every day from the fruits of stolen land and social structures built by colonialism and racism and hope to continue to learn and help to dismantle those powers now and in the future.

The Alderman will be closed tomorrow out of respect to and in solidarity with First Nations people.
We will be marching during the day, and also donating to first nations organizations in an attempt to pay the rent.
We will post tomorrow about the details of that and why we chose those orgs.
