Next up: “James” by Percival L. Everett. A Pulitzer Prize winner.

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.

Book Club Recap: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Our summer classic read.

Our latest book club took us down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim, sparking discussions that were just as winding and thought provoking as their journey. Including the book’s lasting impact. Thanks to everyone who joined us and shared their perspectives. Another great night of books, beer, and conversation.

See you next month for “James” by Percival Everett. A brilliant reimagining of “Huckleberry Finn” that gives Jim his own voice, revealing a gripping story of survival, wit, and the search for freedom.

We had the absolute honor of hosting Houston’s very own Lauren Catching Lauren Catching for an exclusive Q&A and book signing of her historical mystery, The Murders on Cripple Creek!

We got to pick Lauren’s brain about the grit of the Old West, the inspiration for C**t Bradford, and everything that goes into writing such an epic saga of family, faith, and survival. There’s nothing quite like hearing the story behind the story directly from the author!

Thank you so much to Lauren for hanging out with us, answering all our burning questions, and signing our copies!

Exciting News! Meet the Author.

Next up: “You and Me and Us” by Alison Hammer

The heartbreaking, yet hopeful, story of a mother and daughter struggling to be a family without the one person who holds them together—a perfect summer read for fans of Jojo Moyes and Marisa de los Santos.

Alexis Gold knows how to put the “work” in working mom. It’s the “mom” part that she’s been struggling with lately. Since opening her own advertising agency three years ago, Alexis has all but given up on finding a good work/life balance. Instead, she’s handed over the household reins to her supportive, loving partner, Tommy. While he’s quick to say they divide and conquer, Alexis knows that Tommy does most of the heavy lifting—especially when it comes to their teenage daughter, CeCe.

Their world changes in an instant when Tommy receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, and Alexis realizes everything she’s worked relentlessly for doesn’t matter without him. So Alexis does what Tommy has done for her almost every day since they were twelve-year-old kids in Destin, Florida—she puts him first. And when the only thing Tommy wants is to spend one last summer together at “their” beach, she puts her career on hold to make it happen
even if it means putting her family within striking distance of Tommy’s ex, an actress CeCe idolizes.

As CeCe’s behavior becomes more rebellious, Alexis realizes the only thing harder for her than losing Tommy will be convincing CeCe to give her one more chance.

You and Me and Us is a beautifully written novel that examines the unexpected ways loss teaches us how to love.
