A Quick Announcement Before My Sharing

Before I begin, I would like to make a quick announcement.

Recently, a good friend brought to my attention that someone on Facebook has been using our restaurant’s name, James Home Kitchen, to promote and sell merchandise, including clothing printed with our restaurant’s name.

I want to make it very clear that since we opened in 2016, we have never done any commercial advertising, nor have we authorized anyone to use our restaurant’s name to sell merchandise or promote any business.

In fact, we previously had someone use our restaurant’s name without our permission to work with an online food delivery platform. This resulted in many orders that we never received or accepted, since we do not take online orders. We finally resolved the issue by contacting the company’s headquarters directly. This is also one of the reasons we generally do not offer delivery services.

If anyone has suffered a financial loss because of these unauthorized activities, I am truly sorry. I encourage you to hold those responsible accountable.

Please be careful, and thank you to our friend for bringing this to our attention. I hope everyone stays safe!

Come to the Table! Another Thursday Filled with Joy! ❤️

This Thursday evening, we once again had a wonderful and rewarding gathering. It seemed that we had a few more guests than last week! What is even more interesting is that recently, quite a few customers who came to our restaurant on other days have told us they heard about Come to the Table. Some were even from other states or just passing through Springfield!

To tell you the truth, every Thursday, our brothers from Central Baptist Church help set up the tables and clean up after the program, while Lynn and I are busy preparing ingredients, cooking, and serving our guests. Even though we are all busy from beginning to end, we don’t feel it is a burden at all. Instead, we truly enjoy every moment! I think for those who have not yet accepted Christ, this feeling may be difficult to understand.

Perhaps some people may wonder, what exactly are we trying to gain from doing all this? Is it for praise? To improve our social status? Or simply to show off how loving and caring we are?

Haha! If I start talking about my faith again, some of you may be thinking, “James, here you go again!” 😂

However, if you knew the person I was before becoming a Christian, perhaps you would better understand why I treasure these opportunities so much today.

Before I accepted Christ, I had gone through an abusive childhood, became a prodigal son, and eventually a man who betrayed his own family. I also went through some of the darkest days of my life and truly experienced what it means to walk through the “valley of the shadow of death.” There were even several times when I thought about ending my own life.

This is certainly not something I am proud of, but it is part of my life and what I have been through. Oops, I better stop here before I give away the whole story! 😂 Because next Thursday, November 5, I had the nerve to ask pastor Tony to give me an opportunity to share my personal testimony with everyone! 😅

Recently, when I have nothing better to do, I occasionally watch some AI short dramas. Many of them are about someone who did terrible things in the past but suddenly gets another chance to go back and start life all over again. It reminds me of a familiar Christmas story, A Christmas Carol.

In the story, Scrooge was a wealthy but extremely stingy old man. It was not until three Christmas spirits showed him his past, present, and possible future, including what might happen after his death, that he finally realized how wrong he had been. Fortunately, when he woke up, he discovered he was still alive and had another opportunity to change!

I think, who wouldn’t want another chance to start life all over again? This also reminds me of a conversation in the Bible, in John chapter 3, when Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night. Jesus told him, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

Nicodemus was confused. How could an old man be born again? Could he possibly enter his mother’s womb and be born a second time?

Of course, Jesus was not talking about being physically born again, but receiving a new life through the Holy Spirit.

We cannot turn back time, and we cannot undo the mistakes we have made. But through Jesus Christ, we have the opportunity to repent, receive forgiveness, and be born again!

For me, this is not just some religious theory. It is something I have personally experienced. If I had not gone through those broken moments in my life, learned to repent and admit my wrongdoings, and received God’s grace to begin a new life, I truly believe the James you know today might have been a completely different person, or perhaps would not even be here!

This is also why Lynn and I are willing to spend our time, money, and energy on Come to the Table. Because we know that a person’s life really can be changed!

I often think about this. If I truly consider all of you my friends, should our friendship be limited to only the few decades we may spend together in this world?

I not only hope we can be good friends here on earth, but also hope that one day we can become family in Heaven! ❤️

If I truly believe the grace I have received is so precious, but am unwilling to share it with the friends I care about, wouldn’t my love and concern for them be rather limited?

Of course, I have never believed that faith should be forced upon anyone, nor do I believe I have the ability to change anyone. All I can do is share what I have personally experienced. How each person views faith is entirely their own choice. The only one who can truly change a person’s life is God Himself!

Perhaps through my sharing next Thursday, you will better understand how I struggled through my past, learned to repent, and finally, like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon, began a new life.

November 5, I sincerely invite everyone to join us for Come to the Table! Whether you are a Christian or not, you are always welcome! Come enjoy a meal together, have some good conversations, and hear a little about my story.

As for dinner, don’t worry! I will make sure there is plenty of food for everyone. I certainly won’t let anyone go home hungry! 👨‍🍳

Thank you to every friend who has joined us, and especially to all the volunteers who have quietly worked so hard behind the scenes. May God bless each of you with peace and joy!

See you next Thursday! ❤️

Come to the Table! Another Thursday, Another Lesson! ❤️

This week’s Come to the Table was pretty much the same as last Thursday. Nothing really exciting happened during the program, just a warm dinner, happy conversations, and wonderful fellowship together.

However, just like I mentioned in my previous posts, sometimes little things happen that we never expected! I think we often limit God’s work by what we can see with our own eyes.

The ripple effect from this ministry is something Lynn and I probably have experienced more than anyone else. Recently, quite a few new customers from different cities have come to our restaurant and told us they heard about Come to the Table. Many of them were very touched by what this ministry is doing!

Believe it or not, even when I go shopping at Sam’s Club or GFS for restaurant supplies, people have stopped me and asked about this program! 🤗. Well, since they brought it up, I certainly wouldn’t miss the opportunity to do a little advertising for our Thursday fellowship and invite them to come! 😂

Through this ministry, I’ve also had opportunities to hear many personal stories that I probably would never have known otherwise. It has gradually opened my eyes to realize how great God’s work really is, and how He continues working in so many different places, even when we don’t see it!

Let me share one of those stories… Recently, a pastor from Williamsville heard about our Come to the Table program and brought his family, including two of his children, to our restaurant for dinner.

In fact, this couple has four children, and at least two of them were adopted. The two children who came with them were a young boy who is completely blind and a little girl who is deaf. When I saw the happy faces of these two children and how naturally this family enjoyed being together, I could tell how much love and care these children have received!

I honestly can’t imagine how much time, energy, patience, and personal sacrifice these parents must put into caring for their children every single day.

But what did I see from them? Not complaints, not sadness, but joy, peace, and happiness!

It really made me question myself…. If I were in their situation, could I still live with the same joy and peace they have? To be honest with you, whether before or after I became a Christian, I’m not even sure my faith could handle what they face every day!

I truly believe their strength doesn’t simply come from themselves, but from their faith in Christ and their willingness to surrender their lives and family to Him.

Looking at this wonderful family, I had nothing but blessings and admiration in my heart. At the same time, I felt very humbled because I realized how small my own faith is compared with theirs!

Now, back to Come to the Table. I also understand that when people hear the words “Christian fellowship” or “Gospel outreach,” some may immediately have a question mark in their minds… Is this a place for people who are emotionally struggling, having problems in life, or perhaps those who have failed in life?

Believe it or not, before I became a Christian, I had some similar thoughts myself! 😅. In fact, I used to think that people who went to church were probably successful people with good lives because God must have loved them more!

Looking back now, I realize how little I understood about Christianity at that time. Back then, I believed my life belonged to me. Whatever happened, good or bad, I was the one who had to face the consequences. It’s my life, my responsibility, and I’m the boss of my own life! So why would I need Jesus Christ to be the Lord of my life?

Honestly, I couldn’t understand that concept, much less accept it! But after becoming a Christian and going through many different experiences in life, I gradually realized that faith isn’t something we need only when life falls apart. And going to church certainly isn’t a privilege reserved for successful people! Whether we’re rich or poor, successful or struggling, we all need God’s grace!

I personally believe that becoming a Christian is a direct and personal relationship between each individual and God. Nobody can make that decision for you, and nobody should force you to believe!

I really don’t know how many people will eventually hear about the Gospel through Come to the Table, or how many might begin their journey to know Jesus Christ because of this ministry.

After all, this program will eventually come to an end. But I believe only the Holy Spirit can truly touch someone’s heart and lead that person to take the first step toward a relationship with Christ!

Now, let me share a little announcement! 🤗. This season’s Come to the Table will conclude the Thursday before Thanksgiving.

And guess what? On November 5, the ministry team has invited me to share my personal testimony with everyone! I’m really excited and looking forward to that evening!

I believe God has given me this opportunity for a reason. Not because I have accomplished so much in my life or have something special to brag about.

When we share our testimony, we’re not there to tell people how successful we are. We’re there to tell people how God has changed our lives and how He is the source of all the blessings we’ve received!

I have so many personal experiences to share about how God has guided me throughout my life, and I’m really looking forward to this opportunity! I just hope I don’t get too excited and forget about the time! 🤪

I’m pretty sure Lynn will be sitting somewhere in the back keeping an eye on me, and probably giving me a signal when it’s time to stop talking!

For those who know me, managing my speaking time has never been one of my strongest skills! 🤣. Finally, I want to thank everyone who has joined us and all our wonderful fellow workers who have faithfully served every Thursday!

You have given Lynn and me a wonderful opportunity to serve others through our restaurant. We originally thought we were opening our doors to bless others, but it turns out that we’re the ones receiving so many blessings and learning something new every week!

Please continue inviting your friends to join this warm and friendly fellowship. There’s absolutely no pressure, and you don’t have to be a Christian to attend!

Just come, enjoy a good meal, have some conversations, and make a few new friends!

Come to the Table! There’s always room for one more! ❤️

See you next Thursday!

God bless you all! 🙏

Come to the Table! ❤️ Another Thursday, Another Unexpected Blessing!

This week’s Come to the Table went through pretty much the same routine we’ve been doing every Thursday: setting up tables, preparing food, waiting for guests, enjoying our love feast, devotion, fellowship, and finally cleaning up.

Everything seems to be running more smoothly each week. I guess we’re getting pretty good at it! 😁 Before we know it, Thanksgiving Day will be here, marking the end of this season’s ministry.

However, something unexpected happened this Thursday that I would like to share, especially with our dear fellow workers and everyone who has been joining us.

As the evening was coming to an end, everyone was enjoying their conversations, just like one big family finishing a wonderful dinner together. Some were getting ready to leave, while others were already preparing to clean up.

Suddenly, two young men walked into Jame Home Kitchen. They looked a little surprised by what was going on, but they still decided to walk in.

Most of us were busy with our usual routine, knowing the program was almost over. I was in the kitchen when Lynn suddenly rushed in and asked me, “Do we still have any food left that we can serve in a minute?”

Well, it’s showtime for the chef! 🤗👨‍🍳

Believe it or not, I happened to have saved a plate of homemade vegetable dumplings. Those dumplings took quite a bit of work to make, and I wasn’t even sure why I decided to make them that day!

Guess what? One of these young men couldn’t eat pork, and those vegetable dumplings turned out to be exactly what he needed! Coincidence? Maybe! But I believe sometimes God prepares things ahead of time, even when we don’t know the reason. ❤️

The point of this story isn’t about Lynn, my cooking or the dumplings. It’s about something we can easily overlook when we’re busy following our routine.

While most of us were preparing to finish the evening, someone still noticed that two more people had walked through our door and needed to be welcomed.

It reminded me that serving God isn’t just about following a program or completing our assigned responsibilities. We also need to pay attention to the little things happening around us!

Both young men were very happy and impressed with how they were treated.

In fact, before leaving, one of them insisted on giving Lynn a BIG tip! Lynn and I repeatedly refused, but this young man just kept saying to Lynn, “Please take it! Please take it!”. I’m not exaggerating! He must have repeated those words more than 30 times! 😅

I could see the patience and sincere appreciation in his eyes. He simply wouldn’t give up! Eventually, we accepted his kindness with a humble and grateful heart.

But please understand something. I’m not sharing this story to praise my wife, myself, or anyone in particular. What I really want to point out is that serving God’s Kingdom is teamwork!

Some of us prepare food, some set up tables, some welcome guests, some share God’s Word, some pray, and others stay behind to clean up. We all have different responsibilities, but we’re serving the same Lord!

Sometimes, while we’re busy doing our own part, someone else may notice something that the rest of us have missed. That’s why we need one another!

It reminds me of what Jesus said in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches...”. We are all branches connected to the same vine, Jesus Christ. Without Him, we can do nothing!

I believe this is also a good reminder for all of us, including myself. As our Thursday program becomes more organized and familiar, we shouldn’t allow the routine to become more important than the people we’re trying to serve.

After all, Come to the Table isn’t just about preparing meals, holding devotion, or completing a fellowship program. It’s about sharing Christ’s love with people through our actions, even in the smallest things!

One more thing I really want to mention to all our dear guests and friends! Please, please don’t give us tips after the program! We truly appreciate your kindness, but that’s not why we’re doing this. Your presence and friendship are already more than enough for us!

Just come, enjoy the food, enjoy the fellowship, and invite your friends to join this big family!

To all our dear fellow workers, thank you for your faithful service every Thursday. None of us can do this alone, and none of us should take the credit. We simply do our part and let the Holy Spirit do His work!

I have learned something new almost every Thursday through this ministry. Sometimes the lesson doesn’t come from the devotion or the fellowship, but from something unexpected that happens right in front of us!

Come to the Table! There’s always room for one more, even when we’re getting ready to close! ❤️

God bless you all! 🙏

Come to the Table! Another Thursday, Another Lesson ❤️

One of our visitors recently sent me a prayer request concerning his illness. I want to share a little story about this young brother and what God has been teaching me through this Thursday ministry.

When I first met him, he was a very soft-spoken young man. During our conversation, he voluntarily shared his personal health struggles and his faith in Christ. Interestingly, I never mentioned our Come to the Table fellowship to him. In fact, he heard about it from someone else!

When he told me he had heard about the Thursday fellowship at my restaurant and was thinking about coming, I invited him. But I must admit, my heart was troubled a little. Why didn’t I tell him about this ministry in the first place?

That little moment made me realize something about myself. Sharing our faith and being a witness for Christ shouldn’t be something we do simply because it’s on our schedule or because someone tells us to do it. It should come naturally from our hearts!

Since then, Lynn and I have started telling our customers about Thursday’s fellowship without hesitation. 😊

The lesson I learned is simple: Our walk and our talk should be consistent. Serving God should never become just another routine or obligation. I believe God doesn’t need anything from us, but He does want our hearts and our faith!

This young brother couldn’t attend last Thursday because of the side effects of his medical treatment. He sent me a message asking for prayers because he has been fighting his illness for a period of time.

I have to admit something else. In the past, I probably would have said, “I’ll pray for you, brother!” and then gone on with my busy life. Sound familiar? 😅 But this time, I stopped what I was doing and sent him a heartfelt prayer. His response was filled with appreciation, joy, and comfort.

It reminded me again that when we call ourselves the salt and light of the world, we really need to live differently, because Christ Himself is the source of that light!

Every Thursday, I seem to learn another lesson about humility, faith, and what it really means to have a servant’s heart. I thought we were opening our restaurant to serve others, but God has been using this ministry to teach me as well!

Now, a little update about last Thursday! 😁

We had fewer guests than the previous week. Maybe it was because of the long holiday weekend, or maybe it was the food I prepared! 🤔😂 Well, I can’t control who comes through the door, but at least I can do something about the food!

After consulting with my boss (you know who she is… Lynn! 🤣), we’re thinking about serving Honey Pork or Tonkatsu Pork, along with a vegetarian dish for those who don’t eat meat. Hopefully, that will bring a few more smiles to the dinner table! 😋

At the end of the day, all of us serving in this ministry can only do our best. We can prepare the food, open the doors, invite people, and welcome everyone with love. But it is the Holy Spirit who touches hearts and makes this ministry grow, not us!

So please, don’t feel uncomfortable or think you need a special invitation. Just walk in on Thursday evening!

You might be surprised to discover that James Home Kitchen is more than just a restaurant. It’s a place where everyone can feel at home! ❤️

And remember, you don’t have to be a Christian to come. Just bring yourself, your appetite, and maybe a friend or two! 🤗

Come to the Table! There’s always room for one more! God bless you all! 🙏

Week Three: Guests Are Bringing Friends! 🤗

I still remember when we started James Home Kitchen 10 years ago. We chose not to advertise the business but simply leaned on faith and word of mouth. In fact, several close friends in Christ even told me that we wouldn’t survive six months if we didn’t follow the world’s way of doing business. 😅

Furthermore, we even shortened our business hours to dinner only, closed on Sundays and major holidays…and yes, sometimes even hunting season or motorcycle riding days. 🤪

The fact is, we’re truly not making profit, but we still feel abundantly blessed. Over the years, we have received so much love and so many blessings from customers—some we knew and some we didn’t know—who later became our close friends!

Let me name just a few blessings we have received: A retired doctor helped connect us with other physicians and specialists to take care of our health. An amazing brother always cleans our parking lot during snow season and fixes mechanical things without asking anything in return. We received so many warm cards from many of you during our difficult times. Occasionally, fresh homegrown vegetables or flowers mysteriously appear at our front or back door! And there are many, many more…😅

Whenever we open the door for business, we always try to have a joyful heart—no poker face! 🤪. If business gets too busy, we shut off the carryout phone! If business is too slow, we close early and praise the Lord for giving us some extra rest time. 😂

Believe it or not, how we started from nothing and ended up owning our restaurant was already a big miracle. What I’m trying to say is that God has a plan for both Lynn and me. We just need to remain faithful to Him.

Come to the Table fellowship is another vision that I believe God has prepared for His servants. The timing is just perfect because we need to be equipped and ready for His work.

We have never worried too much about whether James Home Kitchen can be seen by the public. What touches my heart much more is reaching those who have not yet known Jesus…it’s in His timing, not ours.

More than 55 years ago, I was a little boy excitedly carrying my small stool and waiting in school open field to watch the “Jesus Film” shown by the “A-Dor-A”, the big-nosed American missionaries, as we kids called them back then. 😅

I don’t remember much about that night, but I clearly remember crying when I saw that “good man” being brutally crucified by bad people. I asked my mom, “Why?” But she was crying too.

Without that exposure to Jesus as a little boy, I don’t know if I would have had another chance to know Christ while growing up in a country where Christians were only a very small percentage (less than 5%)of the population.

It was all part of His plan. Just as the Bible says: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NIV)

Now in Week Three, we started noticing something very encouraging: Guests are bringing friends! Maybe it starts like a tiny mustard seed and grows into something much bigger than any of us can imagine.

I don’t believe we can move the mountain—but God can.

Never underestimate God’s power. We may not know what He is doing in someone’s heart today. One person sitting at one of those tables may someday become our brother or sister in Christ….even if it takes 25 years, just like it did for me! Our job is simply to plant, water, love people, and remain faithful. God makes it grow.

By the way, we had plenty of food this Thursday, and nobody had to wait on the cook either! 🤗. So don’t be shy, bring a friend, and come join us this coming Thursday night! ❤️

Our second Come to the Table gathering!

I’ve told people before that sometimes I’m really a man of “little faith.” 😂 About 10 minutes before 6:00 this Thursday night, I looked around and realized not many people had shown up yet. Of course, my anxiety started kicking in a little bit.

So I went back into the kitchen, kept myself busy preparing the food, and quietly prayed: “God, this is Your event. We are only Your servants. Whether it succeeds or not is in Your hands.” Basically, I passed the responsibility back to God. 😅

And then something amazing happened. Within the next few minutes, people suddenly started coming in, one after another. By the end, we actually had even more people than last time! 🤗

This ministry was started through Central Baptist Church, and I’m very thankful that Lynn and I were invited to be part of it. But today, there are also brothers and sisters from other churches joining and serving together.

So to me, Come to the Table doesn’t belong to any one church. It belongs to the Lord. What makes it happen is simply a group of people who love God and are willing to serve together, regardless of which church they attend.

Our purpose is not to pressure anyone to become a Christian. We simply want to share the Good News of the Gospel. So please don’t feel any pressure when you come. Nobody is going to grab you and force you to believe in Jesus. 😂 Whether you are already a Christian, not a Christian, or simply curious and still looking, you are welcome🤗

It’s really just a simple meal, some conversation, fellowship, and sharing about faith. In today’s fast-changing world, especially with AI becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, I sometimes feel that real human connection is becoming weaker.

Maybe Come to the Table can simply be a small place where people sit down together again, talk to each other, care about each other, and let a little love move around the room.

It also reminds me of more than 35 years ago, when I had just come to America and was first introduced to Christianity. My English was very limited at that time. I wanted to learn English, and some brothers and sisters from church invited me to meals and spent time with me. Even though communication wasn’t always easy, I still remember the warmth they showed me.

What shocked me even more was that after I became a Christian, they started calling me their “brother.” For a young guy who had just come from Taiwan, that was actually a huge cultural shock…..I recorgnized that my English wasn’t good, my skin color was different and I came from a completely different culture and background. But none of that mattered. In Christ, they simply called me their brother.

Later I realized they really had no choice. 😂 Of course, they did it willingly! Because that is what God calls us to do. When we have received love, we should learn how to pass that love on to someone else.

By the way, the food service went much smoother this time than the first one. But I did learn one very important lesson:

Next Thursday…..MORE James’ signature CHICKEN WINGS! 🤪. They disappeared way too fast!

I also want to thank the brothers who came early to help arrange the tables and chairs, and then stayed afterward to put everything back the way it was. You guys are awesome! ❤️

I don’t think Come to the Table is trying to do something huge or change the world overnight. Maybe it is simply reminding us of something very basic: Love needs to be passed on. And faith cannot only be something we talk about.

If we really believe the Gospel, then people should be able to see something different through the way we live and the way we treat others. Faith cannot just come from our mouths. It has to show up in our actions. Thank you to everyone who helped make Come to the Table possible, and to everyone who came. And thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve.

For Lynn and me, Thursday has become a day we truly look forward to every week. We’ll continue Come to the Table every Thursday through Thanksgiving, and then bring this season to a close. 🤗

So next Thursday, we’ll Come to the Table again!

May God bless everyone with peace and good health, and may we continue passing along the love that we ourselves have received. ❤️

1st Night of Come to the Table! ❤️

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about our first night. I even took the day off from work to get everything ready. The night before, several of our ministry friends came to help move tables and chairs and prepare for the dinner.

Our menu was bone-in pork chops, asparagus, my famous potatoes 😋, and of course, everyone’s favorites—James Signature chicken wings and my wife’s famous Crab Rangoon!

We had about 30–35 people come that night. I think some people are probably still watching and wondering what this Come to the Table thing is all about 😂. But I was very happy with the turnout.

To me, numbers are never the most important thing. Faith is.

I believe Come to the Table gives us a different way to reach people who may not have a church or different faith background. Maybe even more importantly, it gives us a chance to reconnect with people who once had faith but, for whatever reason, have drifted away from church.

In Taiwan, there’s something about food that naturally brings people together. We sit around the same table, eat, talk, laugh, and get to know each other. No pressure. Just people spending time together, hopefully experiencing a little of the love and warmth of God’s family. ❤️

This ministry has also reminded me of something very important: the church is not the building……the church is God’s people.

Because of work and other responsibilities, I haven’t been able to attend church regularly. So what does God do? He brings brothers, sisters, and friends to my restaurant instead! 😂

We may gather in a church building, in someone’s home, or around a table in a little restaurant. The place is not what makes us the church. When God’s people come together in Christ, love one another, encourage one another, and welcome those who are searching, that is what the church is really about.

Maybe that’s one of the special blessings of Come to the Table for me: sometimes we go to church, and sometimes God brings the church to us. 🙏❤️

Now I do have one confession 😂. The bone-in pork chops were a little drier than I wanted. Apparently nobody wanted to hurt the cook’s feelings because nobody complained! 🤣 Don’t worry, I learned my lesson. Next Thursday should be better!

Thank you to everyone who came and to everyone who helped make our first night possible. And please don’t feel any pressure about coming. Just come, enjoy some food, meet some people, talk, laugh, and enjoy the evening with us.

To give is a blessing, and to receive is also a blessing. Both are God’s grace.

See you next Thursday! 🤗❤️🙏
