As we reflect on the legacy of Fred Melick, Perry’s first city postman, it feels only fitting to pause and honor the building that stood at the heart of his daily route: La Poste, originally opened in 1915 as Perry’s official Post Office.

Designed by architect Oscar Wenderoth, this beautiful building still turns heads with its tile-clad hip roof, tall multi-pane windows, and timeless charm. For decades, it welcomed Perry residents through its doors... helping them send off letters, receive long-awaited packages, and stay connected to the world beyond.

Fred Melick walked miles each day to deliver the mail that passed through these very walls. This building wasn’t just brick and stone; it was a lifeline, a meeting point, a piece of Perry’s pulse.

Today, La Poste lives on in a new role: thoughtfully restored as a historic venue that celebrates art, music, food, and community. Its two event spaces are now home to weddings, concerts, gallery nights, and moments that matter.

From delivering letters to delivering joy, La Poste, LLC remains a place where people connect just like it did in Fred’s time.

We’re holding space in our hearts this week for Rich Jones and his family and friends. Rich was a cherished member of what we lovingly call the “Old Men’s Coffee Group” here at the Hotel Pattee. Every week, like clockwork, Rich would join the circle of familiar faces for coffee, conversation, and connection. He brought with him warmth, wit, and that unmistakable spark of someone who truly cared about his community and the people in it.

Rich wasn’t just a regular at the hotel; he was a cornerstone of Perry itself. Through his leadership and service with the Perry Lions Club, Perry Industries, Perry Economic Development, the Wiese Foundation, the Dallas County Hospital Board, and Habitat for Humanity, Rich lived his life in constant service to others. And he did it all with a quiet steadiness and generous heart that left a mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.

Many of us will miss him deeply… his stories, his laughter, his kindness. And though his chair at coffee will sit empty, he will never be forgotten.

Sending love to his family, his many friends, and all who were touched by his life. Perry is a better place because of him.
